DU Inter College: SGGSCC run past Venkateswara College to enter Last Four

In what was a virtual knockout match, SGGSCC held their nerves and defeated Sri Venkateswara College by 8 runs to enter the semi-finals of DU Inter College tournament. With this win, they also confirmed a berth in the group stage of the next edition.

SGGSCC captain Tushar Khattar won the toss and opted to bat first. It turned out to be a nightmarish decision early in the innings as SVC bowlers had half their team back in the hut with only 15 runs on the board in the fourth over. The chief destructor was Vikas Yadav who claimed 4 of the first 5 wickets.

Middle order batsmen Dhruv Gola &NeelashMungali then stitched a partnership of 54 runs which provided a much needed stability to the innings. Some late fireworks from Vasu Goel ensured that SGGSCC had a decent total to defend. The innings eventually ended for 166 runs inside 34 overs. Dhruv top scored with 36. Neelash and Vikas chipped in with handy 27 and 25* respectively.

SVC batsmen did not apply themselves early on and were 3 down with only 18 on the board. Anmol Patial played a splendid innings of 44 and KaranvirGogia remained not out on 28 but that was not enough to sail them through to the semi-finals. SGGSCC bowlers bowled superbly and kept the SVC batsmen in control. NeeleshMungali dried up the runs by giving away only 24 runs in his 9 overs and scalping 2 wickets.

Taking no credit away from the SGGSCC bowlers, SVC had a great chance to overhaul the target but they made a simple target difficult by letting the asking rate jump at a time when acceleration was required. Losing wickets at regular intervals didn’t help either. The most bizarre of all was the run out of Sartaj Singh when things were under control.

In the last ball of 34th over, there was a bit of drama as SVC batsman KaranvirGogia pulled a full toss from Neelesh for a boundary but the waist high no ball was not called by the square leg umpire. SVC players asked for it but the umpire did not reverse his decision.

With this loss, it’s the end of the journey for Sri Venkateswara College in this edition but SGGSCC have their task cut out as their next match is definitely going to be difficult than this one. One mistake and it could be curtains for them as well.
