Axis Mutual Fund trumps HDFC Bank in a roller-coaster of a Match at the Inbox Woods Corporate T20

In a surprising convergence of finance and sports, Axis Mutual Fund and HDFC Bank recently engaged in a Cricket match that captivated spectators with its friendly yet competitive spirit. The outcome was nothing short of thrilling, as Axis Mutual Fund emerged victorious by a narrow margin of 12 runs in a closely contested battle.

HDFC Captain Nishant Devadiga led from the front, justifying his decision to field first on a hard pitch with good amount of grass, with a fiery opening spell of 2-1-1-1 . In fact, the first over of the match was a maiden, with Axis Mutual Fund two wickets down. His partner Amir Ansari was also swinging the ball prodigiously. Soon, Axis were 11/3 in 3.3 Overs. That’s when Anil Ronanki entered the arena. What we saw from thereon was an exceptional display of explosive batting from him. He added 62 nuns in the next 6.1 overs with Rajesh Yadav who gave him sensible company. This counter-attack seemed to completely put HDFC on the backfoot. After getting troubled on a couple of occasions in Nishant’s third over, Anil finished off the same with a couple of exquisitely timed boundaries. Cruising at 98/5 in 11.1 overs, Axis received a shock when Anil got caught at the boundary. He scored 68 off a mere 30 Balls with 4 Fours & 7 Sixes.

At number eight walked in skipper Ajish Abdul Rehman. A regular opener, he had dropped himself down the order for the match to ensure that the rest of the team played freely at the top. But soon he saw his side slip to 99/8 in 12 overs. With Axis at the risk of getting bowled out under 100, he took it upon himself to steady the ship and take it deep with the tail. Nikesh Tripathi proved to be an excellent ally, both of them adding 47 runs for the ninth wicket in the next 7 overs. Ajish remained unbeaten with 34 from 28 balls that included 5 boundaries. When Nishant brought himself back for a final fling, Ajish kept the strike and laced him for a couple of boundaries. Gurpreet Singh did well to concede only 2 runs in the final over of the innings in the batting powerplay. Axis reached a respectable 148 in their 20 overs. Siddhesh Dalvi picked up 5 wickets for 19 runs from his 4 overs, and was the pick of the HDFC bowlers.

Chasing a target of 149, HDFC Bank took the crease with determination, ready to face the challenge posed by Axis Mutual Fund’s bowlers. They started the chase steadily. Opener Sarthak’s 21 runs included 2 huge Sixes. Left-arm Pacer Dharmendra Gupta delivered an excellent opening spell of 18-1 in his 4 overs. At 108/2 from 14.3 overs, with only 41 runs required from the last 33 balls with 8 wickets in hand, HDFC seemed to be cruising. But the next 9 balls saw 5 wickets falling for just 2 runs. After going for 12 in his first over, Ajish returned to bowl an astonishingly fiery over that saw 4 wickets tumble for just a single run. That turned the match on its head. After his excellent batting display, Anil completed a great all-round performance taking 1 wicket for 20 runs from his 4 overs of left-arm spin. Shrikant Gawde (28 from 20 balls) provided some resistance before HDFC were bundled out for 136 with 5 balls to spare.

For leading from the front with an almost perfect display of all-round performance of 34 not out and 5 wickets (4 bowled, 1 Lbw & 1 caught behind) for 19 runs, and a run out to go with, skipper Ajish Abdul Rehman was declared the Man-of-the-Match. He mentioned that it was a clinical Team effort to beat one of the strongest and oldest Corporate teams around. The game was characterized by intense moments, skillful performances, and strategic plays from both teams, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats. Ajish Abdul Rehman’s standout role in Axis Mutual Fund’s victory added to the drama, earning him acclaim from the cricketing community. Beyond the boundaries, the match served as a unique encounter between financial institutions on the cricket field, emphasizing the shared values of teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship in both finance and sports. Axis Mutual Fund’s triumph was a testament to the idea that success can be achieved across various arenas, whether in the world of finance or on the cricket pitch.

As the cricketing community reflects on this spirited competition, the Axis Mutual Fund vs. HDFC Bank cricket match will be remembered as more than just a game.
