Captain’s knock from Mahi Thakkar seals the deal for Payyade Sports Club
Seldom does the team lose when one of its bowlers picks up a five-wicket haul. Such was the day for Bharat Cricket Club as they went down to Payyade Sports Club by three wickets in the fifth edition of Late Arjun Madhvi Women’s Trophy on Saturday in Thane.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Bharat Cricket Club managed to score 183 before getting bowled out in 37.5 overs. Skipper Ketki Dhure led the charge with a solid knock of 53. Alongside Dhure, opener Dhanashree Waghmare (38) and Shrutika Patil (22) made useful contributions with the bat. However, Bharat Cricket Club could not bat all of the 40 overs as Payyade Sports Club’s bowlers bowled well to scalp wickets at regular intervals. Disha Lote starred with the ball for Payyade Sports Club as she grabbed three wickets.
In reply, Payyade Sports Club chased the target with as many as 49 balls to spare. They lost seven wickets in the process and at one stage it appeared that the match could swing in Bharat Cricket Club’s favour. After the fall of Thakkar’s wicket, Bharat Cricket Club made Payyade Sports Club’s batters toil hard for every run. Eventually, Payyade Sports Club clawed their way back into the match, courtesy of 38-run partnership between Abhilasha Awatramani (17) and Ashlesha Barar (21 not out).
The run chase was well-orchestrated by captain Thakkar, who packed a punch with a blistering knock of 76 from just 42 balls that saw a dozen fours and three sixes. Despite Laxmi Saroj’s (5/69) heroics with the ball, Bharat Cricket Club could not defend the total. Saroj’s fifer was the first of this edition of the tournament.
With this loss, Bharat Cricket Club have been knocked out of the tournament. Payyade Sports Club will feature in the next stage of this competition.
