Supriyo Chakraborty shines in Byju’s Jharkhand T20, working hard to make it into the Jharkhand Sr Team
Byju’s Jharkhand T20 was played in July-August last year among six teams, namely, Bokaro Blasters, Dhanbad Dynamos, Dumka Daredevils, Jamshedpur Jugglers, Ranchi Raiders and Singhbhum Strikers. Bokaro Blasters won the tournament by beating Dhanbad Dynamos by four wickets.
There were many good performances that caught the eye. Ranchi Raiders’ captain Supriyo Chakraborty was one such player who grabbed the attention. Supriyo is a right handed middle order batter and a right arm medium pace bowler. He was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 14 wickets from nine matches, at an average of 16.92 and economy of 7.72. He delivered the best bowling figures of 2-19 in one of the matches in the competition. Apart from his outstanding bowling performance, he made some useful contributions with the bat in the middle order. He muscled 170 runs, including the best of 56 not out. He was the third highest run getter for his team. Supriyo averaged a healthy 42.50 and had a strike rate of 122.30 in the tournament.
“I am very happy with the way I played in the tournament. I could lead by example as I made useful contributions with both bat and ball. I have already played for Jharkhand U-23 for two years in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Later I was picked in the senior state side and made my T20 debut for Jharkhand in 2018-19 during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy,” Supriyo told to CricketGraph.
After that season, due to COVID-19 imposed restrictions there were no matches. Supriyo had no idea where his cricket was going. Last year when the cricketing action resumed, Supriyo was hopeful of being a part of Jharkhand team. But for reasons not known, he was not in the squad of 20 for the domestic competition. In another tournament, which was the Vijay Hazare tournament, he was happy to be back in the thick of things. He was named in the squad but just one night before the departure of the team, his name from the list of team players was replaced. Apart from Supriyo, three other players were replaced for reasons not known.
