Elite cricketer’s schedule demands regular travelling for matches who live in hotels and out of suitcases.  This can pose a number of challenges to meeting nutritional needs. Limited food availability, different standards of food hygiene, wrong timings, quantity of food, unfamiliar foods, and interference with usual routines can see cricketers either, gaining weight, facing problems in the game/training or failing to meet their nutritional requirements.

And therefore, as a Sports Nutrition expert, I guide cricketers for making healthier choices and do easy to do nutritive meal preps when on tours. For cricketers on tour and travelling in hectic schedule, the following tips may help achieve their dietary goals:

  1. Prioritize and be clear about your nutritional goals and stay committed while travelling.
  2. Do some prior investigation to find out what to expect at your destination.
  3. Pre-organising your accommodation with meals and cooking facilities gives you more control over your meals, helps you make healthier choices and can keep food costs down.  If you choose not to cook, make sure your accommodation is conveniently located near shops and restaurants.
  4. Food safety and hygiene should be major concern as it may lead to stomach upsets.
  5. Take a stock of healthy foods with you so you always have access to something suitable. Breakfast cereal Protein bars, nuts, basic supplements, sports drinks, and fruits are good options to pack.
  6. Try sticking to the meal options in the nutrition and make good choices in restaurants.  Beware of hidden fat, added sugars, about cooking methods and ingredients in restaurant meals. Be free to ask the waiter and request changes if necessary.
  7. Beware of the weather conditions of the match venue and carry super foods accordingly.
  8. Beware of the banned substances that might be used by someone else which might get added to your meal preps.

Mumbai Police B after being put to bat first notched up a total of 150/6 in 20 overs which is quite defendable. Late cameos of by Yogesh Patil (27 off 15) and Yogesh Sawant (23 off 13) ensured Mumbai police crossed the 150 runs mark. Bhushan Patil with 3/32 was the pick of the bowlers.

Kailash Kolekar came up with a match winning bowling spell of 5/19 in 4 overs which made life difficult for the batsman. Kailash was spot on with the ball taking wickets at regular intervals as Mumbai Police B won the match by 54 runs.

KC Gandhi High School after being put to bat first at Union Cricket Academy Ground in Kalyan managed to post a moderate total of 119/3 in 20 overs. Despite wickets in hand, they found it difficult to attack in the death overs. Karan (35*) and Prathamesh Patil (19*) with their quick cameos ensured atleast a respectable total for KC Gandhi. PAB bowlers really did an impressive job coming up with economical and tight bowling spells.  Darshan Rathod (1/25 in 4 overs), Pranay Shinde (0/21 in 4 overs) and Daksh Patil (0/20) were particularly impressive not allowing the batsman to free their arms.

PAB Cricket Academy in replay chased down the score in 19.4 overs winning the match by 5 wkts. Their openers put up a 65 run stand with opener Raj Patil contributing the bulk of the runs and remaining unbeaten on 44* off 62 balls. Over the years Mandar Garude has been one utility player who often comes very handy with the bat and very lethal with the ball too.

Intellect Designs after being put to bat first at the Oval Maidan Ground were reduced to just 55 runs all out in 14.3 overs. Leading from the front as the pick of the bowler, Mandar Garude came up with envious bowling figures of 5/12 in 3 overs. Mandar was spot on not allowing any batsman to settle which eventually resulted in Intellect Designs getting all out for a very low total. Abhijeet Chavan with 3/16 in 4 overs was also impressive.

Chasing 56 runs was a mere formality as WNS B openers sealed the game in 5.4 overs with Saurav Tendulkar (13*) and Harshad Mahulkar (39*) remaining unbeaten.

WNS B won the match by 10 wkts and almost 14.2 overs to spare while Mandar Garude was declared ‘Man of the match”
