Modern English School to participate in their first ever inter school tournament, a dream come true for an ex-student.
After years of persistence and hard work, Modern English School, Chembur, will finally play its first ever leather ball cricket tournament this year, thanks to Subramaniam (fondly called as Subbu), former student of the school and now a full time cricket coach. “Since the time I was a student of Modern English School, it was always my dream to see my Alma mater competing in a leather ball cricket tournament”, averred Subbu. Though a little late in the day, Subbu has made his dream a reality and now his school will participate first in the DSO (District Sports Office) Cricket Tournament that is played by a large number of schools in Mumbai followed by Giles Shield.
Subbu who is the coach of the team is excited and rearing to see the school represent the tournaments at U-14 and U-16 level. The selection has already been done and a bunch of 30 boys is selected; 15 each for U-14 and U-16. CIWA ground hosted the selection trials, and Subbu along with Ashok Kadam finalized the squads. The players also got a chance to interact with Pravin Tambe, one of the most talked about bowlers from the IPL, when he rendered a motivational speech.
The training sessions begin in the first week of October. The energy in the Modern English School camp is at the highest peak and the players are ready to play some serious cricket. “My aim is to develop a very good cricket team at the competitive level”, added Subbu.
Subbu’s love for cricket and ofcourse his Alma mater can be clearly seen from the tremendous efforts that he has put in to get the school boys together to play professional cricket. The cherry on the cake is Subbu has received strong support from Kalyana Sundaram, the President of the school, who took over the reins just a couple of years back. Sundaram said, “The school was not much into sports before, but now since we have Subbu by our side, we are participating in cricket tournaments. I believe that sports is an essential part of curriculum as it helps develop leadership qualities among the students”.
Cricketgraph.com wishes Subbu and Modern English School all the very best for their debut tournament.
