Gannon Dunkerley Invitational Championship 2019 (also known as GDCL) kick started with a bang on March 17 when Cricket Club of India XI and Malabar Hill Club locked horns against each other at CCI, Mumbai. Winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Malabar Hill Club went for plenty as CCI scored a daunting 179-5 in 20 overs. The opening pair of Raj Khandwala (31) and Tejas Patani (28) provided a solid start with a 55-run partnership in six overs. The start was capitalized well by the middle order batsmen Sahil Purohit (36 not out) and Zaosh Irani (32 not out) to give CCI a challenging total to defend. With the ball, Vishal Shah starred with 2-28 in his four overs.

Chasing a mammoth 180, Malabar Hill Club succumbed to pressure and was dwindled down to a paltry 98-7 in 20 overs, losing the match by 81 runs. They got off to a horrendous start as the opening pair was shown the dressing room inside three overs. Coming in at number 3, Samir Mogul was the lone warrior as he played a masterclass innings of 55. However, Mogul failed to find able allies and when he found one in Ankur Jhaveri (21) it was too late in the day. Credit goes to the CCI bowlers for keeping it tight and not allowing Malabar Hill Club to come even close to the target. Tejas Patani and Minesh Shah bowled well in tandem to scalp couple of wickets apiece.

Cricket Club of India XI Team

CCI XI’s Sahil Purohit was presented with the Man of the Match award for his gritty unbeaten knock of 36 in 21 balls (4’s: 5, 6’s: 1) down the order.

It was his bowling spell which restricted Brothers CC to just 69 runs all out helping his team win a low scoring match by 33 runs.

In the match vs Rocket Sports Club at Azad Maidan, Mangrol SC restricted them to just 73 runs where in Yogesh had taken 4wkts for 9 runs in 5.1 overs. MULUND KNOCKERS

This is for the third time that team Mulund Knockers is participating in the FCC tournament. I must say that the tournament gets better and better with each passing year. With the increase in the number of teams from 8 to 10 since last year, it has become even more competitive. This tournament goes a long way in providing a platform to plenty of working professionals who are amateur, passionate and weekend cricketers and to those who represent club(s)/team(s) at lower division; a platform where they can showcase their talent against competitive teams, get noticed via local press/media and in turn get rewarded with stints from better higher division teams. Dr. Ashish and the entire team have been brilliant organizers throughout.

I hope that the matches are highly competitive and at the same time, are played in the right spirit by all the teams. With the games being played at AIS, Taloja cricket ground – an excellent facility, I hope that all the participating players relish this opportunity to the fullest and play some tough cricket on the field. Post this tournament, even if a few players get noticed and go on to bag opportunities with better teams, the purpose of the tournament will be fulfilled.

Players to watch out for:

Ramsingh Thakur: Ram is a known entity in FCC tournaments. A stylish wicketkeeper batsman, who on his day can demolish any bowling attack. He is also an exceptional outfielder known for taking great catches.

Vishal Kannoujia: A genuinely quick fast bowler and a power hitter. He can clear the ground easily with his stand-and-deliver sixes.

Anish Shetty: Anish is a fast bowling all-rounder known for his tight bowling at the death and power hitting with the bat. He is also a very safe catcher in the outfield.

Ishaqbaue Shaikh: A very wise cricketer who has the habit of carrying his bat through the innings. He is also a very handy off-spin bowler.

Tauseef Khan: A veteran, a prolific run getter, needs no introduction.

CRICKET CLUB OF DOMBIVLI

Cricket has thought me a lot about life. It’s not about how hard you fall, it’s always about how fast u get up. Cricket is the most radical thing that has happened to me. Last year we were runners up in this tournament. So close yet so far. But I can still feel the excitement and pride of playing in the finals. I was really impressed by the cricketing talent that was on display in FCC 2018. Because of so many talented players, the competitiveness in the tournament was of top drawer. The tournament itself was organised in a very professional manner. Quite impressive I may say.

This year with our good consistent performance we hope we will go all the way. It’s won’t be an easy task as other teams are also very talented and competitive. But we are up for it.

Our core team strength is bonding on and off the field. CCD being an 80+ member cricketing club, galore of talented players are there. All in all, a happy go lucky team who wears their pride on their sleeve. Play hard, party even harder, well that’s our team spirit. Well see you soon on the field. Let’s play some cricket!

Best of luck to all the teams.
