Mumbai: R.A. Podar College’s opening bastman Bhupen Lalwani scored a century (108 runs), but his efforts went in vain as they suffered a five-wicket defeat against Rizvi College in a quarter-final match of the Mumbai University Inter-College Cricket Tournament which was played at the National CC ground, Cross Maidan on Friday.
The dashing opener Bhupen’s0 fine 86-ball innings was studded with 12 sweetly-timed boundaries and three powerful sixes. He received good support from Sanket Kashte 67 runs and Arya Satpute 33 but they could only muster to score 258 for the loss of five wickets from their quota of 45 overs.
Rizvi comfortably chased down the target as both the opening batsmen Srujan Athawale (91 runs) and Rudra Dhandey (84 runs) laid the foundation for their win with a soild 173-run partnership for the 1st wicket. Later, Sidak Singh scored an unbeaten 40* to steer Rizvi to 259 /2 in 39.4 overs clinching an emphatic win.

Edelcap after being made to bat first at Cross Maidan were off to a decent start with opener Vipul Yadav scoring a 36 ball 49. Rajesh coming at no.4 changed the course of the game smashing an electrifying 91 runs in just 38 balls. His innings included a massive 9 sixes with 5 boundaries while Chandan’s Dre Russ type cameo of 13 ball 38* (2 fours, 4 sixes) further pushed the team total to a massive 232/6 in 20 overs.
Bernard Shipping in reply managed to score only 160/8 in 20 overs out of which Rohan Jagdale impressed one and all with the ball coming up with one of the best bowling figures of the tournament. Rohan conceded mere 11 runs in 4 overs and managed to bag 5 wkts keeping the opposition under control as Edelcap went on to win the match by 72 runs.
Ajit Rai, right-handed opener batsman of Central Bank Recreational Club, provided the strong and decent start. A target of 183 always seemed too much for Oriental Insurance Sports Recreational Club, even on this super-flat New surface. The Oriental Insurance Sports Recreational Club made a valiant charge in their own innings, but did not have the firepower that Central Bank Recreational Club possessed, and ultimately went down by 18 runs in a last league match of the 60th Sir Benegal Ramarau Inter Bank Cricket Tournament, organized by RBI Sports Club and played at the Youth’s Own Union(Cross Maidan), Mumbai on Friday. Sixteen banks have participated in this tournament and from each group, two teams will qualify for the quarter finals.
Central Bank Recreational Club won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers stole the show,78-run stand off 63 balls between Ajit Rai and Vinod had already set Central Bank on track for a mammoth score. Ajit Rai and Rohit also responded with a 76-run third wicket stand to put Oriental Insurance Sports Recreational Club in the driver’s seat. Ajit Rai, wicketkeeper of Central, smashed unbeatable century, 100 off just 60, including seven fours and three sixes. Ajit Rai also won the title ‘Man of the Match’ . Because of Ajit Rai’s brilliant ton, they were at 182 for 3 after the end of 20th over.
For Oriental Insurance Sports Recreational Club, Rahul hit 44 off 27, and Prasad made 52 off 45, but even with a strong support, they never looked like getting extreme close. Three bowlers disappeared at more than 8 an over. The Oriental Insurance collapsed from 76 for 1 to 164 for 5 in pursuit of 183 in 20 overs. with Vinod (26) and Prasad (52) adding 57 runs for the third wicket.

But, then Vaishnav tried to hit a pull shot and unfortunately got out in the 11th over. It was a good partnership. I was playing without any pressure. And we ended up at 182. RJ College after batting first vs the powerful Rizvi Team posted a total of 295/9 in 44 overs which is quite a defendable total. Despite a top order collapse with the top four batsmen falling out quickly it was Viraj coming at no.5 and rescuing his team with an impressive 105 runs. What’s more, he also stitched a match saving partnership with the talented Maxwell Swaminathan who again proved to be useful down the order at no.7 scoring 79 runs to take the team to a strong position.
Rizvi College in reply were bundled out for 81 runs thanks to RJ bowlers who made life difficult for the Rizvi batsman. Viraj who scored a hundred also became the pick of the bowlers taking 4/30 in 8 overs while Maxwell who scored 79 also chipped in with 2 wkts for just 5 runs helping RJ College win by 214 runs.
Tvacha Team after opting to bat first at Belapur Sports Association scored a big total of 207/6 in 20 overs. Opener Ganesh Samant opening the innings smashed the bowlers in every corner of the ground hitting a blistering 53 runs off just 24 balls.
Samant’s knock consisted 7 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 228.00 while Shikhar Singh coming at no.3 proved to be equally destructive hitting a magnificent 64 runs in just 32 balls which had 4 fours and 4 sixes propelling the team total to 207/6 in 20 overs.
Tata Hospital in reply suffered a heavy collapse which made even Devendra Chaukar (44* off 35) and Suyog Gaurav’s (29* off 18) efforts down the order go in vain as Tata reached a total of 149/6 in 20 overs giving a 58 run win to the Tvacha team.

In the match between Parajiya Soni United and Khambat Visa Srimali, KVS after being put to bat first at the Old Payyade Ground notched up a competitive total of 197/4 in 20 overs. Khanjan Choksi’s 40 ball 88* at no.4 was entertaining to the eyes which had as many as 9 sixes taking his team to a healthy total.
However, Parajiya openers put up a massive 179 run stand for the 1st wicket thanks to some brilliant onslaught by the Dhakans. Opener Vicky Dhakan went on to score a match winning 90 in mere 43 balls (10 fours, 6 sixes) while his opening partner Prem Dhakan scored an equally impressive 58 off 33 balls (6 fours, 4 sixes) setting up the tone for a easy chase. Parajiya Soni team eventually won the match by 7 wkts and 4.2 overs to spare.

In the match between Halai Lohana Mahajan Mumbai and Parajiya Soni United on 31st March at the Old Payyade Cricket Ground, Parajiya team after opting to bat first scored a massive total of 224/5 in 20 overs which in most of the cases is a match winning total. Vicky Dhakan this time coming at no.3 continued his blazing form scoring a brilliant 80 off just 36 balls (7 fours, 6 sixes). Deven Satikuvar at no.5 played the finishers role for his team scoring an impressive unbeaten 83* off 38 balls (8 fours, 6 sixes)
Halai Lohana Mahajan Mumbai who were at one point needing 148 runs in 72 balls with 7 wkts in hand got back into the game thanks to a match winning partnership by Parth Rughani and Shivam Thakkar.
Parth who is known to be a clean hitter of the ball stayed true to his reputation scoring a flashy 60 off just 26 balls at no.5 while Shivam’s 45 ball 76 at no.4 which had 7 sixes was nothing short of a game changing knock. Both the players-Parth and Shivam rescued their team from jaws of defeat as Halai Lohana chased down the score successfully winning the match by 5 wkts and 5 balls to spare.

In the match between KSG Stars and NVVS, KSG stars after opting to bat first at New Payyade Ground had their openers falling out cheaply but it was the 144 run stand for the 3rd wicket between Umang Sheth and Umang Shah which brought their team back into the game. Umang Shah coming at no.3 scored an anchoring knock of 61 runs in 44 balls while Umang Sheth remained unbeaten on 91* off 48 balls (8 fours, 4 sixes) in what could have been a blazing ton taking the team from 22.2 to 210/5 in 20 overs.
NVVS on the other hand were bundled out for 105 runs as KSG bowlers proved to be too difficult to handle with their spot on bowling helping their team win the match by 104 runs.

After Mumbai Women’s team clinching its 6th ODI win in 8 matches, the girls seems to be on a roll with everyone contributing in their capacity. The team has showed a lot of grit and courage defeating major teams under crunch situations.
The latest victory came against Hyderabad where Mumbai team after batting first put on a total of 158/9 in 50 overs. Jemimah registered her 6th score of 50+ in 8 matches which just shows how big a prodigy she is. Defending a modest total of 158, Mumbai bowlers did an excellent job of restricting Hyderabad to just 146 runs all out in 49.2 overs. The last over was a thriller but Mumbai girls came out victorious on the back of some really tight bowling where in Jagravi Pavar with 3/14 in 10 overs and 3 maidens proved to be a havoc over the Hyderabad batswomen.
Mumbai girls have certainly made all of us proud, hence, lets take a look at some of the players who stood out in the tournament for Mumbai.

Saniya Raut has been the leader of the pack in the bowling department with a 3wkt haul, 4wkt haul and a 5wkt haul all in her kitty. Saniya has bagged 18 wkts in 8 ODI’s which are some stunning numbers at an impressive bowling average of 11.16 and best bowling figures of 5/18 in 10 overs vs Tripura.

Goes without a saying, she is not only the highest run getter of Mumbai team but also overall in the Tournament. In 8 ODI’s, Jemimah smashed 5 half centuries and 2 hundreds at a stunning batting average of 97.33 and a strike rate hovering above 93.00+. With 584 runs in 8 ODI’s alongwith 6 wkts, she has been the most utility and prolific player coming out from the U23 Mumbai team.

3. Vrushali Bhagat-

Vrushali Bhagat has been that one utility all-rounder whose contribution in the entire match may not be even visible to many. Chipping in with the bat with 20’s and crucial cameos, coming up with a wicket or two at regular intervals has been her forte so far and she is surely proving to be one fruitful all-rounder in the side.

4. Manali Dakshini-

Manali has been one player who has been giving impactful performances for Mumbai team. At a time when most of the batters have been playing at a modest strike rate apart from Jemimah, Manali has been one batswomen at no.7 who holds the ability to score at a strike rate of 100+. Her 55 ball 49 vs Maharashtra and 37 ball 43 vs Delhi at no.7 are testimony of her batting abilities. Apart from that, she has chipped in with 2wkt hauls as many as 5 times in 8 matches making her more than reliable with the ball too. Her spell of 10 overs, 6 maidens and 8 runs vs Tripura will be remembered by her and her team mates for a long time.
BPCL after opting to bat first just managed to post a modest total of 256 runs for their 1st innings against an opposition team which consisted Wasim Jaffer and Cheteshwar Pujara.
The experienced Vinit Indulkar who has been scoring runs ever since we remember at the grassroot level consistently scored a polished 74 runs while Aakarshit Gomel was equally good for his 70 runs. From Indian Oil, Rajesh Pawar and Aamir Gani with 4wkts each were the pick of the bowlers.
Indian Oil Sports Club in reply posted 318/10 in 114.2 overs where in Indian Test Team’s batting mainstay Cheteshwar Pujara came good with crucial 74 runs. On the other hand, India’s most successful domestic batsman and a veteran Wasim Jaffer scored 73 runs which was a sight to behold. For all the young players it was certainly a rich experience to play alongside such experienced cricketers.
Aamir Gani who had taken 4/112 with the ball also chipped in with the bat scoring a handy 64 runs.
BPCL batted for 16 overs for the loss of one wkt and 62 runs in their 2nd innings before the end of the game’s play wherein Indian Oil won the match on 1st innings lead in the 3 day test encounter.
Tata Sports Club showed great resilience and remarkable fighting qualities to snatch a tense 2-run victory against Future Group in a cliff-hanger final of the 10th RCF T20 Cricket Tournament 2019 for the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Cup, organized by Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers Limited and played under the auspices of MCA at the RCF Colony ground, Chembur.
After captain Akshay Darekar decided to field first the Future Group bowlers got the early breaks and reduced Tata’s to 47 for 8 wickets in 11 overs. But a face-saving effort from number 9 batsman Vishal Dabholkar who scored a 34-ball unbeaten 27 runs which was studded with three boundaries steadied the Tata’s innings which finally folded at 94 all out in 19.1 overs. Dabholkar and Siddharth Raut (15 runs) put together a 33-run ninth wicket partnership to provide some respectability to their innings. Sagar Mule (4 for 5), Aatish Gawand (2 for 28) and Javed Khan (2 for 22) were responsible for Tata’s poor showing with the bat.
Defending a low total, the Tata’s spinners Brijesh Gharat (3 for 16), Aditya Dhumal (3 for 19) and Chirag Khurana (2 for 6) rose to the challenge and tormented the Future Group batsmen and bundled them out for a paltry 92 runs in 19.4 overs to clinch victory and emerge champions. Raunaq Sharma (27 runs) and Shashikant Kadam (16 runs) were the only batsmen to get into double figures.

Gharat was named ‘Match of the match’ and he also won the Best Bowler award. Shashikant Kadam (Future Group) was declared as the Player of the tournament.

Darshit Zaveri, opener batsman and skipper of Motilal Oswal, provided the super fast start, Dhruv Sheth and Abhishek Tawde built an outstanding platform, and specially Abhisekh gave the Motilal Oswal innings a furious finish, whomping two sixes and three fours in a 12-ball 32. A target of 245 always seemed too much for Pepe Jeans, even on this super-flat New surface. The Pepe Jeans made a valiant charge in their own innings, but did not have the firepower that Motilal Oswal possessed, and ultimately went down by 36 runs in a match of the Pulse White Ball Corporate T20 League 2018-19, organized by Pulse Entertainment Sports Event and played at the New Hind Sporting Club Ground,Matunga East, Mumbai on Saturday.
Motilal Oswal won the toss and elected to bat first. Captain stole the show,106-run stand off 42 balls between Darshit Zaveri and Pankit had already set Motilal Oswal on track for a mammoth score. Darshit was by a distance the more explosive of the two, hitting nine sixes and eight fours – to hurtle to 90 off just 31 balls. Darshit Zaveri also won the title ‘Man of the Match’ . What a terrific inning!
For Pepe Jeans, Chetan Thakur hit 71 off 40, and Krishna Kumar made 51 off 16, but even with a strong support, they never looked like getting close. While a few the Pepe Jeans’ batsmen can take some positives from the game, their bowlers will probably want to forget it. Chaitan, Govardhan and Kailash all disappeared at more than 9 an over. As with the bat, so was Krishna great with the ball. Krishna (4/30) was the pick of the Pepe Jeans bowlers.
