Where there is sport, there are injuries. Every athlete has got some injuries through their sporting career. Injuries are a part and parcel of the game. Here is a short informative insight about injuries.

Sports injuries are injuries that occur during sport, athletic activities, or exercising. Sports injuries are commonly caused by overuse, direct blow, or the application of force that is greater than the body part can actually hold.

There are two kinds of sports injuries: acute and chronic. An injury that occurs suddenly, such as a twisting of the ankle caused by an awkward landing, is known as an acute injury. Chronic injuries are caused by repeated overuse of muscle groups or joints. Poor technique and structural abnormalities can also contribute to the development of chronic injuries.

Types of sport injury

Soft tissue injuries

Soft tissue injuries are the injuries that occur to the skin or the muscles or to any soft part of the body to simplify it more. They can be generally grouped into three categories: contusions, abrasions/ lacerations and tears. Contusions or bruises are a result from contact with an object. For example, a ball hitting the thigh which causes bluish discoloration of the skin. Severe contusions may involve deeper structures and can include an injury to the nerve
or blood vessels.

Abrasions are superficial injuries to the skin and bleeding, if present, are minimal. In simple terms, it is the damage to the skin when a person dives or falls to field a ball which sometimes can cause bleeding.

Hard tissue injuries

Types of hard tissue injuries can include dental and bone fractures and are less frequent than soft tissue injuries in sport, but are often more serious.

Overuse injuries

Overuse injuries can be defined as injuries that result from repetition of same kind of activities, without a specific onset incident. For example, stress reactions and fractures in the spine or shin bone.

Researchers say that Cricket injuries at elite level have been shown to occur at a rate of around 18 injuries in total for a squad of 25 players who play twenty matches in a season and that is a huge number. On average, around 9% of
cricketers have an injury at any given time, although in fast bowlers over 15% are injured at any given time.

There are very different physical demands involved in different types of cricket, which has meant the injury profile is slightly different between five-day Test matches and one-day matches. The launch of Twenty20 cricket has placed a
new physical requirement on cricketers, the game has gone faster and so the intensity on the field has also increased leading to increased number of injuries.

Research has indicated that muscle injuries such as hamstring strains and side strains are the most common cricket injuries. Low back pain is particularly prevalent among younger fast bowlers. The repetitive action of bowling for long spells places excessive stress on the tissues of the lower back, where stress fractures of the vertebra (spondylolysis or spondylolisthesis) can develop.

Most common types of cricket injuries:

 Ankle sprain
 Contusion/ Bruises

 Concussion (ball hitting on the head/ helmet) – mild reversible brain injury
from a blow to the head, which may be associated with loss of consciousness.
Symptoms include headache, dizziness and short term memory loss.
 Cuts and abrasions –The knees and hands are particularly prone.
 Dehydration – losing too much fluid can lead to heat exhaustion and heat
stroke.
 Dental damage – a blow to the jaw can crack, break or dislodge teeth.
 Shoulder labrum and rotator cuff tear.
 Groin strain
 Hamstring/ Quadraceps strain bruising.
 Knee joint injuries – The ligaments, tendons or cartilage can be affected.
 Low back pain/ Stress fractures/ shin pain – particularly in the lower limbs.

The impact of repeated jumping or running on hard surfaces can eventually stress and crack bone. Here was the update on the different types of cricket injuries. In the coming articles I will be writing more on the cause of the injuries, how to prevent it and much more.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Ashay Palkar who was declared the “Best Batsman” shared in the post match ceremony-

Having played for Mumbai in all the age groups under 15,17,19,22, I had taken a break from professional cricket for 4 years for pursuing a career in Management studies.

I got placed in IT giant Infosys and shifted to Pune in 2016 as a software consultant. In Pune I started playing IT cricket just as a hobby. There I got noticed and was insisted by my wife Pranjali to start playing selection matches for Maharashtra Ranji team.

Initially it was very difficult managing work and cricket both, however after persevering efforts and hardwork towards my skills as well as fitness, made it into the Maharashtra Ranji side this year. The key success factor was fitness which helped me achieve the almost impossible come back to first class cricket.

Thane Premier league has always been a big event for Thane cricketers as we all looked forward to playing here at the newly renovated Dadoji kondev stadium which is our home ground since we started playing cricket.

I have been leading the team Eknath Shinde XI for 9th consecutive year now. But this year was special as the tournament has achieved higher levels with the best of the players competing.

I couldn’t be happier with my bowling this year, contributing with economical spells plus wickets leading to my team’s victory. Took 10 wickets in 4 games.

Vidyadhar Kamath who was awarded the Best bowler in TPL shared in the post match presentation ceremony-

I started my junior cricket in Mumbai, but was neglected by the selectors and couldn’t get a place in the state team, so tried my luck in Goa, where I made my first class debut.

I was then noticed by the railways coach and took a job in Central railways where I continued my first class streak.

Sincere efforts and hardwork on skill and fitness lead to good performance at the club level in Mumbai. I started working on my leg spin under the guidance of Omkar salvi sir and Abhishek Nayar against my conventional off spin. The hard work paid off as I grabbed 13 wickets in All inter railway championship at Delhi which was followed by 5 WICKET haul in times shield A division against BPCL

This year’s Thane Premier League tournament at the renovated venue Dadoji konddev by Mr Vikas Repale where I bowled leg spin as against conventional off spin that I used to bowl in which I took 8 wickets in 4 matches

I am very happy to get the BEST BOWLER prize leading my team into the finals of the tournament.

One of the biggest T20 tournaments of Mumbai will begin soon which will have a huge variety of players. The tournament witnesses every year the most emerging talents, Ranji stars, IPL Stars and even Indian Cricket Players to provide the fans some nerve wrenching and exciting matches and individual performances.

Every year, you get to witness a talent which was relatively unknown to the masses. Let’s take a look at some power-hitters you certainly need to watchout for in the latest edition of T20 Mumbai ’19.

Age-25

Akash Parkar

Akash Parkar is a Maharashtrian Twenty20 Cricketer who made his T20 debut for Mumbai on 1st April 2015 against Odisha. Parkar made his List A debut for Mumbai in the 2017–18 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 5th February 2018 and is known for his raw power hitting. Last year, he had given some mind blowing performances both with the bat as well as with the ball. Parkar’s 40 ball 68 when Mumbai North East were on the verge of losing or his 37 ball 82* at no.7 which had 6 sixes vs Sobo Supersonics is still fresh in the opposition’s mind. Adding icing on the cake, he is an equally dangerous bowler, he had also taken a fifer last year in the DY Patil T20 Tournament’19

Sairaj Patil

Team-North Mumbai Panthers

Age-23

Sairaj made his T20 debut for Mumbai team on 29th January 2017 and is often feared by the bowlers during the death overs. Last year, he gave some quickfire cameos and also gained a lot of fame for his ability to hit picture perfect helicopter shots which he often describes as “Hawai Dhamaka”

He is the ideal batsman for any team between 15 to 20 overs as he can lend finishing touch to the innings much similar like how Hardik Pandya did this season for Mumbai Indians.

Jay Bista

Age-23

Team-SoboSupersonics

A budding all-rounder who plays for Mumbai Ranji team, he is known to be one of the swashbuckling batsmen in his age category. Known to be a lethal striker of the ball who can hit the most gorgeously powerful shots, Jay also has his own version of “Bista Scoop” which is hailed by many as the new stroke of the town. Jay had also smacked some whirlwind knocks last year and taken on fast bowlers with quite some confidence.

At the top of the order, if not taken his wicket early, he can change the game in a matter of few overs.

Rudra Dhanday

Age-21

Team-Shivaji Park Lions

67 ball 203 (in T20), 80 ball 130 (in 45 over game), 204 off 193 balls (In 2day test) are some of his big scores in the last few years. Rudra who has played for Mumbai team at various age levels also holds the record for fastest double hundred in India when he scored a 67 ball 200 in the Mumbai University Inter College Tournament at the Matunga Gymkhana Ground. Opening the innings for Rizvi College, Dhanday’s double ton was laced with 21 boundaries and 15 sixes.

The youngster will certainly be a player to watchout for as he looks promising to pounce on the opportunity given to him at the big stage.

Swapnil Salvi (RHB)

Age-29

Team-North Mumbai Panthers

Swapnil Salvi is one of the ideal wicket-keeper batsmen to have in your Playing XI. Not only quite effective and vigilant behind the stumps, the right-hander is also one brutal hitter of the cricket ball. In the recently concluded Prabodhan T20 Tournament, he had smashed 2 fifties in 3 matches out which one included a belligerent 71* off mere 20 balls in the finals which had as many as 8 sixes while the other one was a 20 ball 51 vs Payyade CC in the league round. Even in the ongoing Thane Premier league, Swapnil smashed a 25 ball 53 for Maharashtra Cricket Academy at a time when rest of the batters were struggling to score runs!

 ____________________________

Sujit Nayak

Age-29

Team-Namo Bandra Blasters

A former Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai cricketer, Sujit Nayak is a tall well built left hander who can hit some stylish and effortless sixes on the back of brute power which he possesses. Coming from a cricketing family himself, cricket runs in his blood and Nayak idolizes Yuvraj Singh with whom he shares a very similar batting stance.

Apart from registering the highest score in Mumbai T20 last year hitting a brilliant 99*, Sujit Nayak has consistently proved to be a T20 specialist batsman with some good performances in the DY Patil T20 tournament too.  In 2016, Sujit had smashed 3 tons in Purshottam Shield and all had come at a strike rate of 100.00+

Can take on the fast bowlers with ease and can be quite dangerous in the 2nd half of the T20 innings (i.e between 10 to 20 overs) as he can smash those lusty blows to change the momentum.

Alpesh Ramjani (LHB)

Team-Eagle Thane Strikers

Alpesh Ramjani

A tall, well-built & a powerful left-hander who comes at the middle order, Alpesh Ramjani is one of those players who can be quite effective with the bat as well as with the ball. Ramjani’s 34 ball 64* which had 5 sixes while chasing 195 last year vs Sobo Supersonics had helped Shivaji Park Lions win the match. In that match, he displayed some exquisite hitting and he will certainly play a handy role for Eagle Thane Strikers this year!

____________________________

Parag Khanapurkar (LHB)

Team-SOBO Supersonics

A reckoning force with the bat at the local level, Parag has been a consistent performer across various MCA tournaments. Last year, when Arcs Andheri were struggling at 16/4, Parag came in to bat and took on the bowlers hitting a fluent 38 ball 69 changing the game from nowhere. Raunaq Sharma in the latest DY Patil T20 Cup had scored a brilliant 48* off 22 which had 5 sixes. It also included some consecutive biggies which had helped Future Group win the match from nowhere. Apart from that knock, he has also given some great individual performances in the MCA Tournaments at the local level. Raunaq is also a good spinner and a great fielder while he can be very attacking with the bat in the death overs.

Kevin Almieda (LHB)

Team-Arcs Andheri

If there is any left-hander in Mumbai Cricket who can mix elegance with power, it has to be MIG Skipper Kevin Almeida. The southpaw has many shots in his arsenal and can often dismantle bowlers with his wide array of shots. Kevin’s flick shots and cuts are often a treat to the eyes. A consistent scorer in the longer formats of the game, he often plays with a healthy strike rate too!.

In the recent finals of Palghar Dhanu Premier League’19, Kevin had smashed a quickfire 76* off 32 balls which had as many as 7 sixes! Hence, he will surely be a player to watchout for!

Sagar Mishra (LHB)

Age-25

Team-Eagle Thane Strikers

Once he sets his eyes in, he can be a very dangerous batsman, the 25yr old Mumbai all-rounder became only the 3rd batsman in India in 2016 after Yuvraj Singh and Ravi Shastri to hit six sixes in an over which is a testimony of his big hitting abilities. Apart from that too, he has been a crucial all-rounder in the MCA tournaments. Even though there are many performances to note, but his 103 & 6/47 in the Purshottam Shield’18 was amonsgt the best all-round performances in the recent past.

Suryansh Shedge (RHB)

Age-16

Team-Aakash Tigers Mumbai

Not only is he the youngest player to get auctioned in the T20 Mumbai’19, Suryansh is also known as the Hitman in his age category. Apart from scoring the fastest triple hundred wherein he scored 326* off mere 137 balls in the Harris Shield a few years ago, he has consistently played aggressive cricket at a very healthy strike rate even at the State Level.

An aggressive top order batsman who can be equally destructive if the situation requires, Suryansh can give those good starts or crucial cameos at any position which every team desires for. A consistent scorer at the local level, this wonder kid will be a batsman to watch out for.

Shlok Strikers after opting to bat first at the Modern College, Mumbai were bundled out for mere 43 runs in 13.5 overs. The batsman found it difficult to get going vs the Knight Rider’s bowlers as they kept on taking wickets at regular intervals.

Mann’s spell also included 2 maidens which are quite impressive bowling figures in the limited overs format.

It was a mere formality for Aditya Knight Riders to chase as Abhigyan Kundu (22*) and Kevalnam Bajaj (15*) finished off things for the team.

Aditya Knight Riders won the match by 10 wkts while Mann Bhanushali was declared ‘man of the match’

DY Patil after opting to bat first at Trombay, Koliwada managed to post a total of 152/6 in 20 overs which is if not less atleast a competitive total to defend. Tejas got good support from Sahil Jadhav (49) with whom he stitched a crucial partnership too. The rest of the batters struggled but Tejas kept on building his innings helping his team reach a respectable total. Medium Pacer Aditya Giri with 4/50 in 10.3 overs was the pick of the bowlers.

Matunga Center who have a equally strong batting line up managed to reach only 215/9 in 88 overs thanks to a brilliant spell of spin bowling by Anurag Singh. The left arm spinner took crucial wickets at regular intervals coming up with an envious bowling spell of 5/24 in 24 overs with as many as 10 maidens! Opener Prince Singh (97) slogged it out alone batting for 222 deliveries while falling short of just 3 runs on what could have been a deserving ton.

Anurag Singh

Atharva Bhosale 7* off 52 balls and Ritesh Nalawade 1 off 31 balls fought it out and tried to bat as much as they could resulting in the end of the game’s play with a wicket in hand which resulted in a memorable draw for Matunga Team.
