The batting grip plays an important role in how you swing the cricket bat and make contact with the ball. A perfect batting grip also helps you to yield maximum power while generating shots. Even though the orthodox batting grip is considered to be ideal, it is very crucial for a player to find out which grip works the best for him or her. There are various types of Batting grips like ‘V’ shaped Grip, ‘O’ Shaped Grip, Knott Grip amongst others.

BATTING GRIP PICTURE
BATTING GRIP ILLUSTRATION

Ideally, your bat should be exactly placed right behind both the legs with a straight face.Your dominant hand which is the top hand should be closer to the top of the handle. The other hand which is the bottom hand should be closer to the bat blade. Putting your hands in the middle of the handle gives you the best combination of power and control. A high grip (hands towards the end of the handle) will produce more power.

Jayam is an Indian origin domestic cricketer who has represented Oman “A” team at first class level. Jayam started his cricket career in India at the age of 9 with the backing of his father who he believes played a key role in shaping his career. Jayam started with school cricket representing Hansraj Morarji School under the guidance of legendary Coach and former Indian Cricketer Chandrakant Pandit alongwith Coach Nilesh Bhosle.

His first brush with cricket was when he got to play in Giles Shield for his school team where he bagged 24 wkts in 3 matches in his debut season. In the next season which followed, Jayam evolved as an all-rounder scoring 220 runs in 3 matches alongwith 18 wkts. Jayam was also appointed  the captain of his school team in the 2nd season of Giles Shield- a tournament which is considered to be a stepping stone for any Mumbai cricketer to begin his cricket career.

Jayam on the back of promising performances got an opportunity to lead in the MCA U14 & U16 Camps representing Goregaon Prabodhan Centre. Jayam was also in the probables list for Mumbai U14 team but the intense competition of Mumbai Cricket meant he missed out on wearing the famed lions badged jersey. During his college days, he studied in Thakur College while practiced at Payyade Sports Club where he started playing club cricket from lower division. Soon, Jayam played C Division Club cricket in Mumbai representing Young Comrade Cricket Club.

Jayam also played MCA U19 Summer Camp with Kandivali Center for 2 years. Jayam started practicing at PJ Hindu Gymkhana – a club which has given many successful International and Domestic cricketers and that is where tables turned around for him. Jayam quickly managed to make an impression and received a golden opportunity to play first class cricket in Oman on contract basis in 2017. Jayam in 2019-20 also received a contract with Hollinwood Cricket Club which participated in UK County Cricket.

Speaking with Cricketgraph, Jayam shared– “I was a little skeptical of going to Oman, but then I took a decision of availing this opportunity as there was a lot of politics happening in the game & also due to the competition and less number of opportunities given after a certain period of time. I flew to Oman in October 2017. I can still remember the initial days spent there as they were very difficult & i took quite some time to get adjusted to the new environment, people, atmosphere & routine. After 2 years of my determination and discipline towards the game I got selected for Oman “A” team & also got a wonderful chance to play a practice match in country Jersey.

According to ICC rules, one needs to complete the stay of 30 months in the duration of 3 years. I am now looking forward to play for the national side after completing the eligibility as per the ICC norms”

He came from a small town like Amravati with very less hopes to make it big. He was not good at studies and cricket used to be his only love. However, in cricket too, he had a sketchy journey where he failed to impress during peak moments right from his childhood whenever he had the opportunities. He even went through a road accident at a young age which had almost ended his career. In his first 3 Ranji Trophy matches, he was hardly able to score in double digits. However, one thing which always helped him rise was his attitude to never give up, the support from his parents and backing of coaches like Sulakshan Kulkarni and Chandu Borde which changed his life.

Yes we are talking about Apoorva Wankhade, Apoorva has represented Vidarbha across all formats while he has also played in IPL for Mumbai Indians and KKR. From a small town boy with limited dreams and skills set to making it into the India U19 World Cup Team, Ranji Trophy & IPL, Apoorva certainly has an insuring story to tell which is a must hear for all aspiring young cricketers.
