The final of Architect T20 was completely a once sided game. SSA Strikers were outplayed because of strong performance put up by Edifice team. SSA strikers had beaten Edifice few seasons ago in same tournament and that too in a final match only. Edifice took a revenge by comprehensively defeating Strikers this time. Tushar Koli, Edifice captain won all important toss and put SSA Strikers into bat. The earlier game for 3rd place was a high scoring game. It looked like Edifice would be chasing a high score given the fact that Strikers had some good batting line up.
Edifice though had other plans. Right from the beginning they played top quality cricket and didn’t give any chance to Strikers to make a comeback. Edifice opening bowlers Mahesh Hirpara and Sameer Paradhi bowled at good line and length and restricted Striker’s openers from hitting easy boundaries. Hardik Naik and Sandeep Shirke looked to hang in their but eventually lost their wickets in order to increase the run rate. Strikers were struggling at 50 for 3 with Nitin Gawade trying to rebuild their innings.

But it was Heth Shah who turned the match completely by taking spectacular hat-trick. Gaurav Koli was trapped in front first, Rupesh Londhe followed him immediately after wicket keeper took a sharp catch and Heth was all set for hat-trick ball. Shravan Yadav, Striker’s batsman who was facing the hat-trick ball, failed to read the spin and Edifice players were rejuvenated as Heth had almost confirmed the victory for them. From 50 for 3, Strikers were reduced to 50 for 6. Their tail made little efforts to put some more runs board but Strikers could only manage to score 75 runs. Heth Shah finished with blistering figures of 4 overs 1 maiden 4 for 14. He got good support from his fellow left arm spinner Ravi Sarangan, who too almost took a hat-trick by taking 2 wickets on consecutive deliveries.
Target of 76 was just a cakewalk for Edifice who had a very strong batting line up. However, these low scoring matches often end up in debacle. But Edifice openers, Mahesh Hirpara and Amit Jeewani played sensible cricket without any hurry. Mahesh Hirpara scored 38 before getting out while Amit scored 12. Their No.3 batsmen Sumeet Vengilat took further responsibility on his shoulders by scoring composed 26. In 12th over itself Edifice won the match and thus proved their dominance.
“We were also looking to chase but unfortunately things didn’t go as per planned. Their bowlers bowled well and we couldn’t even complete our 20 overs. We enjoyed playing in this tournament and our track record is also good as we were champions once and runner up twice before. The organization has been pretty good. We are happy with umpiring, scoring and also the technology which these guys are using. We are already looking forward to return next year in this tournament,” said Sandeep Shirke, SSA Striker’s captain.
“I am overjoyed right now. We knew that our team has that ability and we have done it today. All the hard work and practice has been fruitful. Everyone has contributed equally in our journey till here. I got best support from management and others during this tournament. Special thanks to sponsors and organizers for putting up a wonderful event,” said Tushar Koil, Edifice captain.
Al-Barkat school, Kurla registered a comprehensive victory against V.N.Sule Vidyalaya, Dadar and entered Final of this season’s Harris shield in style. This was Al-Barkat’s 4th consecutive win in elite group of Harris Shield this season. Having won previous 3 matches by an innings margin, they almost did the same in semi final which was played at Times of India ground at Azad maidan.
The first semi final which began on 16th of December was a 3 day fixture. But having taken an upper edge on day 1, Al-Barkat didn’t give any chance to V.N.Sule vidyalaya for making comeback. Al-Barkat started day 2 with 91 for 4, 3 runs ahead of V.N.Sule’s 1st innings score of 88. They were looking to build a massive score but thanks to Ninad Thakur’s 6 for 51, perhaps the only mentionable performance from V.N.Sule’s team, as Al-Barkat were bowled out for 155. Still they were ahead by 67 runs in first innings. Shubham Singh scored 40 for Al-Barkat taking them beyond 150 mark.
A low score in both innings had opened up a ray of hope for V.N.Sule vidyalaya to make a comeback. But even this time, they failed to keep Sardar brother’s quite with the ball and it was Rajesh Sardar, the younger of two brothers, picked up 4 wickets for just 15 runs. He was well supported by Mukund Sardar and Jahangir Ansari who took couple of wickets each.
As a result, V.N.Sule were bowled out for just 70 in 2nd innings and Al-Barkat had to score 4 runs to win the game. Without wasting any time, their openers scored those runs in 1st over itself and won it with a day to spare. Their coach seemed to be pretty happy with the performance their boys have put up. “It was a fantastic victory indeed, the main thing of this season’s campaign is that everyone is contributing equally. Such huge wins are results of great team efforts. Our batting looked little shaky as we could score only 155 but it is understandable in bowler dominated match like this. Having said that, we need to work on our batting and our strategies a little more as we are just a step away from winning our 3rd title in last 6 years,” said their coach Nafeez Khan.
But there is some uncertainty about when final and the other semifinal will be played. It is because of the complaint launched against Rizvi Springfield for playing with overaged player. The 2nd semi final was scheduled to start on 16th itself between Don Bosco
and Rizvi Springfield school. But the report is yet to be published by organizers regarding this complaint due to which that match has been postponed.
Al-Barkat though are in no hurry as they will get some good time for rest and for their preparation. But looking at their current momentum, it will be hard for any of the team playing in 2nd semi final to beat them.
It was one of the busy day at Times of India ground on Azad maidan as 1st semi final of this year’s Harris Shield took off on Tuesday. V.N.Sule vidyalaya and Al-Barkat, two of the most prolific teams in Harris shield are up against each other in this all important game. Al-Barkat was the top team in B group while V.N.Sule vidyalaya made it to semis by standing out as best team in D group in Elite division of this tournament.
Two heavy weight teams playing each other means that everyone was expecting a good contest on day 1 here at the Times of India cricket ground. After winning the toss, V.N.Sule opted to bat first in quest of putting up some good runs on road. However, soon they would have regretted their decision as they collapsed for just a score of 88. “None of our batsman could hang in there and I think that’s where we made a mistake. Their bowlers bowled in good areas and our batsman should have played a waiting game,” said V.N.Sule’s coach.
The star performers for Al-Barkat was the duo of Sardar brothers, Mukund Sardar and Rajesh Sardar. Mukund, a right arm quickie, bowled a magnificent spell while claiming 5 wickets for just 17 runs. V.N.Sule batsmen neither had a relief from other end too. Rajesh Sardar, Mukund’s younger brother bowled his left arm spin pretty well, supporting his brother’s efforts from the other end. He took 3 wickets from 17 runs. Hence as a result, V.N.Sule vidyalaya collapsed and failed even to reach a three figure mark.
“I must give credit to Mukund and Rajesh. They bowled pretty well in tandem. There was a healthy competition between them for picking up wickets. It is always good to have such players in your team. Mukund got a well-deserved fifer, he hardly bowled any lose delivery and often stick to good length spot,” said Mr.Nafeez Khan who is the coach of Al-Barkat.
Al-Barkat had fantastic outing during their group stage matches. “We won all 3 of our matches in group stage by an innings margin. Thus, we got bonus point in all of these games. We were pretty much high on confidence coming into semi final. I am very happy with the kind of performance our boys have put up today. In last 5 years we have won Harris shield on 2 occasions. We are keen to make it 50% win record by winning it this year to make it 3 out of 6, which is quite phenomenal according to me. We have bowled well and we have taken first innings lead as well. We just need to carry on from here tomorrow. Some of our batsmen like Mukund Sardar, Mantosh Yadav and Shabaz Kureshi have been performing really well in last few matches. Overall, we are giving our best as a team and hence we are getting fruitful results,” added the coach.
At the end of day 1, Al-Barkat are 91 for 4 with Thapa playing on 31. Earlier, Pushkar Sharma made handy 26 before getting out. V.N.Sule vidyalaya have an arduous task in front of them to win it from this situation. Looking at Al-Barkat’s form, the spectators can already sense yet another innings win for them.
Sankalpan team were knocked out of AT20 after failing to defend 115 against EDIFICE. Earlier, Sankalpan entered super 8s after registering 2 wins in group stage. They were placed in group D in initial stage of this tournament. Sankalpan won 2 out of 3 matches in group stage and entered into super 8s. In very first match of tournament they suffered a defeat against team Dynamites.
However, they recovered well and won next 2 games against MQA and Avengers. “After a loss in first match it was a do or die situation for us. Because yet another loss would have resulted in our elimination from tournament. Against MQA we were bowled out for 118 but we managed to bowl them out for 96. Whereas against Avengers our batting hit the new low and we were bowled out for 94 but our strong bowling line up defended this total as we won by 12 runs,” said Samrat Nakhva who was a key player for Sankalpan during their campaign of this year’s AT20.
Reaching into super 8s meant that the competition was much stronger and margin for error was pretty small as each team played only couple of matches in it. They won their first match against DSP by 17 runs. This time the batsman rose to the occasion as they scored 149 in 20 overs. Having defended two small totals, their bowlers were confident enough to repeat the same again. Eventually DSP was bowled out for 132. Sankalpan were looking all set to make it to semi final before they faced EDIFICE in their final clash of super 8s.
“We were confident about making it to semi final and then the final. But we just couldn’t prevent EDIFICE batsman and especially their opener. (Mahesh Hirpara). We scored 115 in that match and having a good experience of defending totals, we had high hopes from our bowling line up. But we just couldn’t keep their batsmen quiet and they snatched the game from us,” said Samrat Nakhva who was the lone warrior for Sankalpan in that match scoring 66 and taking 2 wickets in that match.
Ironically, Sankalpan had won all of their matches when they batted first and defended the total. A big defeat meant that they had to end their journey in Architect T20 tournament. Sankalpan’s opening bowler Nilesh Pophale went for 22 runs in first over of match. He did really well in all the previous matches but failed to deliver at key moment.
Though Sankalpan couldn’t win a title, they have some positives in form of some players like Samrat Nakhva, Nilesh Pophale and Amol Humane whose performance was extremely well in this tournament. It will be fair to say that Sankalpan will surely return harder and stronger during next year’s Architect T20 tournament.
After their 2nd consecutive losses in Architect T20, DSP has been knocked out of the tournament. They wouldn’t have imagined this at the start of super 8s round as they entered super 8s with 100% win record. “Indeed we never thought that we will get knocked out in this fashion. We had good momentum when we entered into super 8s. We failed to deliver as a unit in Batting as well as bowling. We scored around 130 in both matches of super 8s. That wasn’t a great total but bowlers couldn’t defend the totals when we batted first,” said Krishna Panchal who is an all-rounder of DSP team.
DSP were placed in group C in the beginning of tournament with two other teams. They played their opening game against STUP Supersonics and won by 4 wickets. They restricted supersonics for 119 with Ninad Mhaskar taking 4 wickets. This target was chased down easily by DSP batsmen with 3 overs to spare. In next game they were up against Mott macdonald. Batting first, Mott macdonald scored 146 in 20 overs. Though target was little difficult, DSP had troubles as they chased it down in 18.2 overs with Gaurav Mistry scoring undefeated 58 in just 32 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes.
They topped the group with 2 wins in 2 matches and entered into super 8s. However fortunes took a U-turn as they lost both matches in super 8s and eventually got knocked out of the tournament. “We played against Sankalpan which is one of the strong teams and then we were up against Malik Architecture who are the favorites to win the tournament. We couldn’t even bat for complete 20 overs in both the matches. I think that was the key reason for our failure in super 8s,” said Krishna Panchal.
DSP couldn’t take the advantage after winning the toss against Sankalpan. They opted to field first and allowed Sankalpan to score 149 in 20 overs. Sankalpan had a bowling attack which meant chasing 150 was not an easy task. At one stage they were 107/4 in 12.3 overs when it looked like they can chase it down. But Sankalpan bowlers strike back restricting them to 132.
The defeat against Sankalpan meant that DSP had to win by huge margin against Malik Architect to make through to semi final. Malik Architect put DSP to bat after winning the toss. DSP had a good opportunity to put up a big score. But Malik Architect’s bowlers Sachin Bhosale and Kanish Patel bowled extremely well in tandem with Kanish taking 3 and Sachin taking 4 wickets. DSP could put up only 125 on board which was never a par score. It was a cake walk for Malik Architecture as they chased it down in 16 overs and won by 6 wickets.
DSP showed good promise earlier in tournament but they need to perform well under pressure and win the key moments in match to go up the ladder in tournament. Having learnt this lesson, DSP will be looking to take a U-turn and get back on winning track again.
How many of us still remember that epic game between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians where Mumbai chased down a mammoth target of 190 in just 14.4 overs. It was indeed one of the best matches ever played. There were some similar scenes at Vengsarkar academy ground in Mahul during one of the matches of Architect T20. Edifice, one of the participating teams, were pushed to the wall with only one option in front of them- win a match comprehensively to increase the run rate to enter the semi final. “In super 8s stage we lost our first match giving away a bonus point. Hence we were in such situation. We had to chase down the score in 15.5 overs to stay alive in competition, but to make it to semi final without depending on results of other matches, the limit was 14.5. Hence we had 14.5 overs to complete our target. It was quite an arduous task indeed. But I am happy that we could achieve this feat, “said Mr.Tushar Koli who is working in Edifice as Architect draftsman and also leading his team in this tournament.
Mr.Tushar had every reason to be overjoyed as his men put up a fantastic performance. Edifice were playing against Sankalpan in their last super 8s game. Sankalpan chose to bat first after winning the toss. They couldn’t take advantage of it as they scored only 115 in 20 overs. Opener Samarth Nakhva put a splendid performance with bat scoring a 66. However, though 115 wasn’t a big total, Edifice had to chase it down in 14.5 overs. This meant that they had to go after every ball to reach their before it gets too late. Edifice opener Mahesh Hirpara was outstanding with bat as he scored a quick-fire 25 in just 9 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes. His blistering innings laid a solid foundation for Edifice’s chase.
They reached 56 in mere 3.5 overs when once again Samarth Nakhva chipped in to dismiss Mahesh. Captain Tushar Koli and Virendra Kantak played sensibly taking their team to 100 swiftly. Eventually they achieved target in 13.3 overs and registered one of the historic wins in the Tournament. “Mahesh played really well. He is our pinch hitter and he can bat at any place. There had been instances in past where in 99 while team’s score was 130 in a 10 over match. We are very happy with our win and now we are looking forward to win this tournament,” said the captain.
Mr. Tushar told about his team and their love for cricket. “First time we played about 3 years ago in a tournament organized by CM group. We were runners up in that tournament. We had 2-3 people including myself who used to play cricket in school and college. So we decided to form a team. Now we play in 4 tournaments regularly which includes tournaments like One World sports, Architect T20, CA cup and tournament organized by Ghosh sir at Shivaji Park. We have won a tournament once while ending as runners up on 4 occasions”
Edifice journey towards the title is not simple this year given the fact that they will be playing some tough opponents. “We will be playing against Malik architect. It is a good team and last time they defeated us in final I am pretty sure that if we can win this match then we will win the title regardless who is our opponent in final. We have a balanced team Navin Thomas is a good all-rounder in our team. Mr.Virendra is doing some good work behind the stumps. Ravi sir, our boss himself is a good left arm spinner. So we are confident about ourselves and now everyone is looking forward for the last last 2 matches of this tournament,” said Mr. Tushar.030303
IES Raja Shivaji Vidyalaya, Dadar, is one of the prime school when it comes to Mumbai’s junior cricket. They have been making some name in town due to their fantastic performance in opening game of Harris shield. Placed in group A, IES were up against Parle Tilak vidyalaya’s team which is yet another strong team in their group. However, the match was completely one sided as IES won it comprehensively by an innings and 35 runs.
After winning the toss, Parle Tilak opted to bat first, aiming to put up a high score on board. But IES bowlers had other plans. IES spinner, Viraj Jadhav ran through Parle Tilak’s batting line up takin 6 wickets. He got a good support from fellow spinner Shantanu Khanvilkar. The quickies Survesh Surve and Visharad Pagare took one wicket each. Parle Tilak were bowled out for 121 in just 57 overs. Suresh Kumbala and Nitin Bhalerao tried to put up some fight but their efforts were not enough to take Parle Tilak to a respectable score. They scored 28 and 23 respectively with a partnership of 51 amongst them.
IES batsman had no pressure on them when they went out to bat. Both of them were looking set as they put up 59 for opening stand. Just then Siddique Mulani, one of their opener got run out. Learning from Parle Tilak’s mistakes, IES batsmen scored 325 runs with 3 of their batsmen scoring half centuries. Survesh Surve, Visharad Pagare and Shantanu Khanvilkar scored 68, 81 and 52 respectively. Omkar Pandit and Suresh Kumbala took 3 wickets each for Parle Tilak.
IES already had a lead of 204 runs which meant that they had good chance to win the game by an innings margin. They did exactly the same. Parle Tilak’s batsmen couldn’t cope up with pressure and fell short by an innings and 35 runs. But they showed some resistance as their batsmen tried to anchor the innings without getting out one after the other. Visharad Pagare shined with ball taking a 5 wicket haul. While Suresh Kumbala was top scorer for Parle Tilak with 56 runs.
IES has produced some quality cricketers like Dilip Vengsarkar and others in past. Placed in group B, IES will be playing against Al-Barkat and Lilavati Potdar School in next matches. Having registered a big win here, they are looking all set to make it through to the semi final. On the other hand, Parle Tilak has a lot to think about. With Al- Barkat also winning by 176 runs against Lilavati Potdar School
, the chances for Parle Tilak to qualify for knock outs are extremely vague.
