One of the most respected cricket gurus present in Delhi/NCR. Head Coach of DDCA affiliated – Lal bahadur Shastri Cricket Club. A PHD by qualification and level 3 BCCI Coach. A guide whose pupils went on to bring laurels for the country, Gautam Gambhir being one of them.
We are referring to Mr. Sanjay Bhardwaaj, who we were able to spot in his academy one evening. Let’s have a look at what he feels on few important cricket issues at the local level:
Current State of junior level cricket in Delhi
School level quality is declining with every passing day. T20 cricket has affected the skill set of upcoming cricketers. Days Cricket is not happening on a large scale now. All tournaments are mostly T20.
Student’s Focus
The young cricketers don’t know much about test cricket now, practically, as they don’t get a lot of opportunities to play the same, especially at the junior level. IPL is one of the reasons for this change. Focus on technique and application is reducing with run scoring becoming a priority.
Players’ Preference
Young boys are inclined towards batting for obvious reasons. One more reason for the diminishing interest in bowling is that bowlers only get to bowl a maximum of 4 to 8 overs in the local level tournaments. This is a hindrance in preparing a good bowler as there is lack of practice. Test/Days Cricket is required to enable bowlers to bowl longer spells and apply their skills developed in nets.
Women’s Cricket
Current state of girl’s cricket is not something to speak about. Basic structure is almost nil. It’s important to have facilities, policies that make it easier for girls to take up cricket as a sport at school level. If we are not providing any such facilities and expect that we will have a good senior team later on then we are at fault. It’s important to improve the basic infrastructure and provide initial guidance in any sport.
Advice for Upcoming Players
My advice to all students is, “Focus on studies and learn the things with your heart & soul. Do not rush into becoming a big player. Spend time honing your skills and play good cricket with sportsman spirit.”
Akhilesh Sehwal’s five wicket haul and a fine 83 runs knock by Anuj Rawat enabled West Delhi Cricket Academy defeat LB Shastri Club by 154 runs to enter the final of 2nd Telefunken Challenger Cup, played at County Cricket Ground.
West Delhi Academy put up a total of 257/5 in 40 overs thanks to Anuj Rawat‘s 83 and Aditya Gautam‘s 70 runs. Rishabh Drall captured 2 wickets for LB Shastri Club.
In reply, LB Shastri Club were all out for just 103 runs in 32 overs. Sumit Chikara and Saurav Nagpal scored 27 runs each. Akhilesh bowled a deadly spell of 5/15 and demolished the innings single handedly.

Mohit Saini’s all-round show (60 runs, 2/22) along with good support from his team mates in both batting and bowling enabled Ravindra Public School, Pitampura defeat PMG by 4 wickets in the final to win the 5th SunTan Under 13 Cricket Tournament, played at Shivaji College Ground.
Ram Singh was adjudged the best batsman, Kamal Singh Berwa- best bowler and Mohit Saini- the best all rounder.
PMG batted well but were all out for 180 runs in 29 overs. Ram Singh top scored with 60 runs. Kamal Singh Berwa captured 5 whereas Nakul Singh captured 3 and Mohit Saini scalped a couple of wickets for his team.
In reply, riding on Rohan Jaswan’s 75 and Mohit Saini’s 60 runs, Ravindra School easily chased down the target in 27 overs with 4 wickets to spare. Ram Singh captured 3/18 for his team.

In a thrilling finale contest, DD Bal Bhawan Dwarka defeated West Delhi Academy by just 10 runs to win the 3rd Khem Chand Memorial Cricket Tournament. Hrithik Kanojia was adjudged Best Batsman, Rinku Chikara- best bowler and Ankit Pratap Singh- best all rounder.
Batting first, DD Bal Bhawan Dwarka were all out for 177 runs in 34 overs. Mayank Rawat top scored with 55. Bharat Sindwani contributed with 45 runs. Rajesh captured 3/22 for West Delhi Academy.
In reply, West Delhi Academy chased well, but ran out of wickets as they were all out with just 10 run left to win the match and tournament. Vijay Kumar top scored with 32 runs. Mohit captured 3/22 whereas Rohit Tyagi scalped 3/26.

Riding on Suraj yadav’s excellent knock of unbeaten 81 runs, RKB Academy defeated Mishra Sports by 6 wickets in G.S Cricket Tournament.
Mishra Sports were all out for just 130 runs in 29 overs. Nikhil Singh scored 51 runs for his team. Nikhil Yadav picked up 4/22 and played a crucial role in dismissing Mishra Sports at a low score.
RKB Academy chased down the target in just 22 overs, losing 4 wickets in the process. Suraj Yadav top scored with 81 runs and ensured an easy victory for his team.

A deadly bowling combo of Samik Jain (6 wickets) and Likhit Gupta (4 wickets) ensured an easy victory of Chesta Foundation over PMG by 29 runs in the 7th Radhika Under 19 Tournament, played at Uttam Nagar Ground.
Batting first, Chesta Foundation were all out for just 108 runs in 29 overs thanks to an equally good bowling performance by PMG bowlers led by Siddharth Chokker (5/18) and Akhilesh Saiwal (4/19). Samik Jain was the top scorer with 22 runs to his name.
PMG fared worse in batting when compared to their opponents as then were shot out for mere 79 runs in just 22 overs to lost the match by 29 runs. Samik and Likhit shared all 10 wickets between themselves and were partners in crime for this demolition.

Match Scorecard | Tournament Details
In a low scoring finale, UFLEX defeated EBS by 6 wickets, courtesy an overall team effort and emerged champions of the 1st NCR Day-Night T20 Corporate Cup. Amit was adjudged the man of the match. Sajjal- best batsman, Ankit- best bowler, PK- best fielder, Shrayansh- best emerging player and Babbal walked away with the Man of the Series award.
Batting first, EBS were restricted to just 116/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Kapil top scored with 30 whereas Shikhar scored 25 runs. For UFLEX, Nitin captured 3, Ramesh 2 whereas Amit and Mahabir scalped a wickets each.
Chasing a relatively low score to win the match and tournament, UFLEX lost 4 wickets and the match was decided in the very last over but ultimately crossed over the line. Amit top scored with unbeaten 36 runs whereas Khalid scored 32. Binu Thomas scalped a couple of wickets for his team. Rajesh and Shikhar captured a wicket each.

Air Liner Cricket Academy defeated Master Jaggler Academy by 53 runs in the 3rd Wings Institute Under 19 Cricket Tournament. Mohit Dogra received the man of the match award for scoring 71 runs and capturing a five wicket haul.
Air Liner Academy put up a total of 167/5 in 35 overs. Mohit Dogra top scored with 71. Amit Kumar also scored a half century. Tanmay Joshi captured 2 wickets for Master Jaggler.
In reply, Master Jaggler were all out for 114 runs in the 33rd over. Rahul Singh top scored with 40 runs for his team. Mohit Dogra shone with the ball as well as he picked up 5 wickets. He was well supported by Anish Kumar who picked 3 wickets.

Riding on Rahul Rajpuriya’s excellent all-round show (47 runs, 5/20), JD Tytler School, Rajinder Nagar defeated Uttaranchal Boys by 1 wicket and earned four important points in the 3rd Bat & Ball Under 17 Cricket Tournament.
Batting first, Uttaranchal Boys were restricted to just 145/8 in 35 overs. Saarthak top scored with 37 with Anmol contributing 28 runs to the team’s total. Rahul captured 5 whereas Uzair Ansari picked up 3 wickets for JD Tytler School.
Chasing a small target, JD Tytler batsmen made a mess and lost 9 wickets in the process. But somehow they were able to overhaul the required runs in 32 overs. Rahul Rajpuriya top scored with 47 runs. Mayank Goel scored 35 whereas Sameer Ali contributed 26 runs. Ajanta captured 4 wickets for Uttaranchal Boys.
