The famed opening duo of Akarshit Gomel(145) and Bravish Shetty(141) once again delivering in the finals!

Batting first, Parsee Gymkhana were on song with a massive 247run stand as opners Akarshit Gomel and Bravish Shetty smashed brilliant tons. Trailing a 500+ score in the finals is always difficult but DY Patil’s two most reliable young horses and run machines Shashank Singh and Shubham Ranjane brought the ship back to sailing from 17/2 to 348/3 stitching a massive 331run stand. While Shashank scored an impressive 118 off 152balls (11fours, 2sixes), Shubham went on to convert his hundred into a really big score hitting 247* off 282balls anchoring the innings till the very end with 20fours and 4sixes. Both these boys keep on showing the class they possess and IPL definitely seems to have missed out on these two young turks who are scoring heavily.

Their decision to bat first seemed to have fallen flat with Ravi Shastri XI getting bundled out for 188runs in 58.2 overs. Most of the batsmen failed to convert their starts with Chinmay Sutar being the top scored with 41runs. From the bowlers-Kartik Mishra bowled a superb spell of 5/54 in 13.2 overs as he kept on bowling consistently well in the right areas while also extracted a good spin from the wicket. Played at the PJ Hindu Gymkhana, It was the all important finals between CCI and PJ Hindu Gymkhana. Both the teams have good depth and they have performed thoroughly well throughout the tournament and hence an intense competition was bound to happen.

PJ Hindu Gymkhana who have a good batting line up elected to bat first and notched up 177/9 in 20 overs which is a really healthy score to defend in T20’s.  The openers Madhav Kotak(26) and Suhel Mistry(37) gave a solid start at the top of the order while Dwij Adhwaryu at the lower middle order gave the finishing touch reminding us of Abdul Razzaq of Pakistan who used to bat like this in the One Dayers. Dwij scored an unbeaten 34* off 18balls smashing 5fours and pushing the team total to 177/7 in 20overs. From the bowlers, Minesh Shah was the pick of the bowlers taking 3/35 in 4 overs.

Chasing 178 and that too in the finals of any T20 Tournament is a very pressureful task. The pressure is definitely more on the batsman than the bowlers and CCI despite Raj Khandwala’s brilliant 25ball 66 fell short of 19runs as the rest of the batsmen failed to give him adequate support and convert their scores into something big. The bowlers bowled really well at the death with Paresh Shah bowling a match winning spell of 4/19 in 4overs with a wicket while all-rounder Dwij Adhwaryu also chipping in with 2wkts making it a all-round perfomance.

PJ Hindu Gymkhana win the finals and lift the trophy of the prestigious Gannon Dunkerley T20 Tournament ’18 with excellent team perfomance throughout the season.

Best batsmen- Suhel Mistry (PJ Hindu Gymkhana)

Best bowler- Paresh shah(PJ Hindu Gymkhana)

Sweating it out on uneven pitches in Mumbai under intense heat is always difficult. In a T20, a bowler gets only 24balls to prove himself unlike a batsman who can dodge the tough bowlers and face as many deliveries he wants. In the longer formats a bowler grinds hard with long bowling spells to churn out results. Hence, bowling consistently well is very hard and requires a lot of practice and accuracy.

Here are the top 5 bowling spells in April 2018 which stood out in Mumbai Cricket.

Joint 5th- Harmeet Singh (SLA)- 8/129, Times Shield, Played for Air India Sports Club at Sachin Tendulkar Gymhana

Even though his team lost the semi-finals against the powerful DY Patil Team. Left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh won the hearts of many with his hard fought and passionate bowling spell where he grinded hard under a powerful batting line up taking 8/129 in 29.4overs. Harmeet just kept on bowling with focus and accuracy and it helped him scalp 8 of the 10 high profile batsman of DY Patil. Indeed a great spell Harmeet!

5th-Parag Patil (SLA)-5/32, Kanga Knockout Tournament ’18 at Oval Maidan

Played at the Oval Maidan, Friends SC and Dilip Vengsarkar Foundation took on each other wherein Friends CC won the toss and elected to field first. Made to bat first, Dilip Vengsarkar Foundation were restricted to 179runs all out in34.2 overs which is surely not the biggest of totals to defend.

Defending a low total of 180, the pressure was more on Dilip Vengsarkar boys but they defended the total very well as they bundled out Friends SC to 133/all out in 33.4 overs. Left- arm spinner Parag Patil was the pick of the bowlers as he came up with a match winning spell of 5/32 in 8.4 overs. Parag was bowling at good line and length and gave crucial breakthroughs while Prathamesh Goad who missed out on hat-trick was also impressive with the ball. Dilip Vengsarkar Foundation won the match by 46runs on the back of Parag Patil’s impressive perfomance.

4th-Prithvi Khakkar (RAM)-5/26, Times Shield, HT Media vs Mumbai Fire Brigade at Cross Maidan

HT Media team were in quite a trouble as they were bundled out for mere 158runs batting first. Defending such a low total, all-rounder Prithvi Khakhar ripped apart through Mumbai Fire Brigade’s top order taking 5/26 in 9overs. Prithvi bowled really tight with perfect accuracy as he got 2 catches in the slip cordon in the 5 wickets that he took while one was clean bowled unsettling the opposition.

Mumbai Fire Brigade were all-out for 68runs in 19.4overs on the back of his brilliant fifer as HT Media clinched a thumping win by 90runs.

3rd- Jairaj Bisht (RAF)- 5/23, Kanga Knockout Tournament ’18, Cross Maidan

Played between Gamdevi Cricketers and Khandala CC, Gamdevi boys winning the toss batted first notching up a healthy total of 277 in 45 overs. Chasing 278, Khandala CC were in for a shock as Jairaj Bisht wrecked havoc over the opposition with his tearaway fast bowling. Both the bowlers took on the Khandala batsman with pure dominance as Khandala team got all out for 132runs. Played between SF Sassanian Cricket Club and Kshatriya Union Club at the Sassanian CC ground, Sassanian boys won the toss and elected to bat first on their home turf with an aim of making a big total.

However, SF Sassanian SC were in for a shock as they were bundled out for mere 86runs all out in 32.4 overs. The major reason for their batting collapse on their own homepitch was Kshatriya’s talented left arm spinner Vijay Singh who castled the batsman with his wily spin. Vijay Singh came up with a match winning bowling spell taking 6/27 in 9 overs with 2maidens striking in almost every over. Vijay bowled at extremely good line and length which helped hiM take wickets at regular intervals.

It was on the back of his good bowling, his team Kshatriya Unuin Club chased it down and won the match easily by 5wkts.

AND FINALLY THE NO.1

Shoaib Sayyed (OB)- 5/11, Milan T20 Tournament ’18 at Karnatak Cross Maidan

Well giving away only 11runs in a t20 game in a spell of 4overs is always difficult. More than that giving 11runs and also taking 5wkts is something only a genuinely focused and a talented bowled can achieve.

Played at the Karnatak Cross Maidan, two really promising teams namely Orange and Lintas took on each other where in Lintas won the toss and elected to bat first on a track which had due for the bowlers.

Lintas batting first were in for a shock as they were reduced to a paltry score of 89runs all out in

Not a single batsman managed to make much of an impact as the bowlers did not give room for them to settle in. Even though all the bowlers bowled really well, Atharva Pawar was particularly impressive with the ball taking 3/8 in 4 overs.

Opener Balkrishna Karmalkar

Chasing a paltry 82, Balkrishna opening the innings took care of the chase with his solid batting.
