Maria Sports Academy organized T20 Challengers Trophy in May, having two groups A and B, with eight teams each. League matches were played between the teams and the top four teams from each group played the four finals, namely, Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze.
The Platinum Final in the “A” group was played between TIFR vs Total Oil India Pvt. Ltd. on June 2 at Azad Maidan, Mumbai. Batting first, TIFR posted a mammoth 209-3 in 20 overs, with opening bat Pranav Barge scoring a delightful unbeaten century (104 off 58). The 16-year old’s innings was peppered with 11 boundaries and five sixes. His opening partner Sachin Pawaskar joined the party with a stroke-filled 64 (44), smashing seven boundaries and three sixes. In reply, Total Oil managed to score 145-6 in their full quota of 20 overs, losing the match by 64 runs. Wicket-keeper batsman Ripen Chaurasiya top scored with 60 but failed to get any support from his colleagues. Mohsin Shaikh and skipper Shashikant Kadam, who is well above 50 years of age, and was injured with five stitches, bowled well in tandem to account for couple of wickets apiece. Barge was awarded the Man of the Match for his scintillating century.
The “B” Group Platinum Final was played between OmniGlobal and Cipla on June 2 at Azad Maidan, Mumbai. Winning the toss and electing to field first, Cipla restricted OmniGlobal to a paltry 130-8 in 20 overs, courtesy Vishal Bhoir who wrecked havoc with the ball scalping 4-18 in his four overs. Bhoir consistently pitched in good line and length, making it difficult for the batsmen to get away with him. Omkar Maldikar was the highest scorer for Omni Global scoring 32 off 30. In response, Cipla chased down the target easily in 19.1 overs, winning the final by five wickets. The opening pair of Siddhesh Gulekar (35) and Akshay Patil (31) laid a solid foundation for the middle order to come in and finish the game. Rahul Bhadreshwara was the pick of the bowlers for Omni Global picking up 2-26 in his four overs. Vishal Bhoir was bestowed with the Man of the Match for his brilliant bowling display.
The Silver Final of “A” Group was played between Tech Mahindra (Andheri) and MSEB, which the former won by three wickets. Sandeep Mundaye from Tech Mahindra won the Man of the Match for his all-round performance in the form of picking up four wickets and scoring a useful 15.
The Bronze Final in the same group was played between tech Mahindra (Malad) and SS Travels, which the latter won by five wickets. Prem Chand from SS Travels bagged the Man of the Match for scalping three wickets.
The tournament witnessed many wonderful performances. Though Total Oil India Pvt. Ltd. did not win the final, the team had a lot to cheer about as they received Best Batman and Best Bowler awards. Neel Kadam (Total Oil India Pvt. Ltd.) who scored as many as 237 runs in four matches and Deepak Joshi (Total Oil India Pvt. Ltd.) who picked up nine wickets in four matches were awarded the Best Batsman and Best Bowler of the tournament respectively.
Played at Elphinston, it was the all important and a crucial finals between Ours CC and Titans Cricket Academy where in Ours CC won the toss and elected to bat first on the back of their strong top order batting line up.
Ours CC did a decent job on a track which had due for the bowlers by notching up 164/4 in 20overs which is a quite a defendable total. Opener Sunny Tambe and Ayush Vartak stitched a brilliant 103run stand with both the boys smashing match winning fifties. While Sunny Tambe scored a solid looking 52 giving excellent support while Ayush on the other hand scored an attacking 40ball 60 laced with 8boundaries taking the game away from the opposition. Ayush as always looked confident as he kept on rotating the strike while also smashed the loose deliveries for boundaries.
Defending a total of 147, Ours CC did an excellent job as they restricted Titans C.A to just 73/7 in 20overs winning the finals by 73runs. The bowlers did an excellent job by taking wickets while bowling really tight now allowing the batsman to score freely.
Ours CC win the Sachiwala Gymkahana T20 Tournament while Ayush Vartak was declared ‘man of the match’ by MCA Secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar.

Played at the Oval Maidan, it was the all important finals between Cric Spartans and IDBI where in both the teams have fought hard throughout the tournament to reach the finals. Both the teams were well balanced and an exciting competition was bound to happen.
Cric Spartans winning the toss elected to bat first with an aim of making a big total. However, Cricspartans were not able to make a big total and make much of an impact as they scored only 124/5 in 20overs which is quite a defendable total in a T20 game. Tanmay (34*) and Mithun(26*) top scored the but the team lacked acceleration at the end. From the bowlers Shubham S was the pick of the bowlers taking 2/26 in 4overs.
Chasing 125, IDBI who have a really strong batting line up chased down the score successfully in 18overs. Even though the openers fell early but the dependable Vivek Patel who has moulded himself into a T20 specialist played a match winning knock of 60*off 43balls. Vivek who smashed 5fours worked hard running between the wickets keeping the scoreboard ticking. Arbaz Shaikh also gave a good support scoring 37 at no.4 as IDBI team won the finals by 8wkts.
IDBI win the Pulse T20 Tournament in style with great team co-ordination while Vivek Patel was declared ‘man of the match’. The consistent Vivek was also declared the ‘man of the series’.

Played at the AFS Sports Center Ground in Delhi, two promising teams namely PBC Delhi and PBC Haryana where in PBC Delhi won the toss and elected to bat first as the wicket looked good to bat on with an aim of making a big 1st innings total.
Their decision to bat first was quite accurate as they notched up a massive total of 262/3 in 25overs. The openers gave a good start while Saurav Naitiyal who opened the innings went on to score another ravishing 106 off 70balls. Smashing 17fours and 2sixes, Saurav dominated the bowlers from the word go while Abhishek C also played a splendid nock of 89runs in mere 36balls hitting 14fours and 4sixes. Both the players stitched a match winning partnership of 144runs in just 61balls which took the game away from Haryana.
Chasing 262 at more than 10runs per over, the pressure was surely on the chasing team as its difficult to chase big totals like this. Eventually PBC Haryana were restricted to 197/6 in 25overs. Even though they batted well but it wasn’t enough as the bowlers did an excellent job.
PBC Delhi won the match by 65runs while Saurav Nautiyal who is in excellent all-round form was declared ‘man of the match’ for his brilliant hundred.

Payyade S.C. Kandivali and M.I.G Bandra locked horns against each other on May 31 during the final match of U-19 Manohar Savant Trophy. Winning the toss and electing to field first, Payyade S.C. restricted M.I.G to a total of 192-7 in 45 overs. Sagar Chhabria top scored with an unbeaten 53 and found able allies in Sanket Kashte (36) and Aditya Srivastava (33). However, this total was not enough as Payyade S.C. cruised to an easy win, chasing the target in 34.4 overs, winning the match by four wickets.
Rahul Kesari was the best batsman for Payyade as he scored a fluent 45, with Manan Zatakia chipping in with 40, and skipper Karan Shah muscling a 35. Left arm spinner Omkar Ghule (Payyade), who picked up eight wickets in four matches was awarded the Best Bowler award of the tournament
“Our team was a well-balanced side with many of the players having played from Mumbai already. This was a good tournament as it saw many young talents exhibiting their skills and making a case for themselves in the Mumbai U-19 team”, averred an elated Iqbal Thakur, coach of Payyade S.C.
Three centuries, one half century, and a five-wicket haul were all witnessed in a single game during the final match of U-23 Madhav Mantri Trophy that was played from May 29 to May 31 at Western Railway Cricket Ground, Mahalakshmi. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Ajinkya Rahane XI posted a daunting total of 528-8 in 141.1 overs. Their splendid batting performance saw three centuries, courtesy, Sairaj Sangle (142), Pranav Kela (107), and skipper Shams Mulani (102). Harminder Palaya was the pick of the bowlers for Sachin Tendulkar XI accounting for 3-99.
In reply, Sachin Tendulkar XI, who had won the league match against Ajinkya Rahane XI, were bundled out for a paltry 257 in 109.5 overs. Akash Anand top-scored with 78 and was ably supported by Bhupen Lalwani (46) and Shadab Khan (34). Left hand bat Shams Mulani who hit a century earlier in the match created magic with the ball picking up a fifer. Mulani, a left arm orthodox bowler, was the wrecker-in-chief grabbing 5-66, and unequivocally had a lion’s share in Ajinkya Rahane XI’s success in the final match. “Akash Anand was my favourite wicket. Out of my wickets, three were leg before wickets”, exclaimed Mulani.
Based on the 1st innings lead, Ajinkya Rahane XI was declared as the winner of the U-23 Madhav Mantri Trophy.
Played at the Central Maidan thane, Thane City Police and Thane Gramin Police took on each other for the all important encounter. An interesting competition was bound to happen with Thane City Police winning the toss and electing to bat first.
Their decision to bat first was spot on as they notched up a very good total of 192/7 in 20overs. Opening the innings, Saidesh Bhagat scored an anchoring knock of 52* off 44balls laced with 5fours and 1six. Saidesh remained till unbeaten till the end holding the ship as batsman from the other end kept on changing. The rest of the players also gave quick contributions with Hemant Sonavane’s quick 32 off 17balls (5fours, 1six) coming in very handy during the slog overs.
Defending a total of 193 which is really competitive in a T20 game and especially in the finals, the pressure was more on the chasing team as its an above par total. However, Thane Gramin Police succumbed to the pressure of chasing at 10runs per over as they were restricted to 153/9 in 20overs. Once again the bowlers of Thane Police co-ordinated well together as Ram Patil, Vaibhav Bane and Prashant Suryavanshi took 2wkts each while Hemant and Avinash chipped in with a wicket each.
Thane City Police won the finals by 49runs and win the Thane Police Shield Tournament on the back of collective team perfomance throughout the series. In the finals the bowlers again did an excellent job with Saidesh and Hemant contributing with match winning knocks.

Played at the Karnatak Sporting Club, Cross Maidan, after a grueling and intenseful season where teams from different corners of Mumbai come and perform, two best teams who have fought ahrd throughout the tournament took on each other namely Youngstar CC and Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana club where in JVPG won the toss and elected to field first.
Youngstar batting first notched up a decent total of 224/8 in 45overs which is a defendable score on a pitch like cross maidan. The team was off to a solid start with Rahul Bhat (35 off 62) and Sankalp Pednekar (58 off 99) giving an opening stand of 98runs. Rahul batted well while Sankalp lended much needed stability at the top order. Then came a string of 20’s before Amit Rathore who came at no.8 scored a really crucial knock of 44 off mere 23balls laced with 6fours and a six. Amit’s 44 was a crucial cameo which helped his team cross the 200run mark.
Defending a total of 225, Youngstar bowlers did an excellent job of restricting JVPG to 188/all out in 44 overs. Left-arm spinner Prakash Aswani who is one of the most experienced bowlers in the team delivered at the right time when it was needed coming up with match winning bowling figures of 4/33 in 9overs. Amit Rathore made it an all-round perfomance also bagging 3wkts with his off spin alongwith 2wkts for Aniket.
Youngstar CC win the finals and lift the coveted trophy by 36runs on the back of excellent team perfomance led by Sankalp, Amit and Prakash. Youngstar cc(Thane) was coached by Sangam Lad sir. As a coach this was Lad sir’s third championship in this season (2017- 18) in Mumbai’s highly competitive club cricket scenario. Under his guidance besides Thane side winning summer shield his another teams namely Bharat cricket club became champions of knockout kanga tournament & Regent cricket club promoted from F division to E division of kanga league tournament. U19 Manohar Sawant Tournament has been another good platform provided by MCA to the aspiring young cricketers to showcase their talent and skills and perform at their best. So far the tournament has been quite a success and here are some of the latest updates.
In the match between DY Patil and Sonale Bhiwandi at the MB Union Cross Maidan on 24th May, DY Patil were made to bat first after winning the toss but they batted well declaring their innings at 274/7. Vedprakash Jaiswal who came at no.3 played a fruitful knock of 83* off mere 119balls (6fours) anchoring his teams innings. The prolific run scorer seemed to have got back to form as he looked really composed and solid which pushed his team towards a good total. DY Patil successfully defended the total with Sonale Bhiwandi team all out for mere 80runs. DY Patil won the match by 167runs and Ved’s innings was definitely the highlight perfomance of the match.

In the match played between Dilip Vengsarkar Team Mahul and MIG at the Youth’s own Union Cross Maidan on 29th May, Vengsarkar team who have been batting really well so far collapsed this time getting all out for just 135runs in 37.4 overs. Chasing 136, MIG did lose some early wickets but Sanket Kashte scored a solid 62 off 95balls alongwith Aditya Srivastav’s 37*. It was on the back of his solid batting, MIG team won the match by 6wkts in 29.4 overs.

In the match between Chimaji Appa Vasai and Payyade SC at Karnatak Sporting Assn, Cross Maidan on same day, Chimaji Appa team batting first were all out for 182runs with Prashant Pillai who has been a consistent scorer again impressive with a sublime 64 while Atharva Poojari being the pick of the bowlers with 4wkts. Chasing 183, Chimaji Appa gave a tough fight and did not allow them to win easily. However, left handed Karan Shah did gave a jolt and looked good to finish the game single handedly before he was out on 57 off 36balls laced with 6fours and 3sixes coming at no.4. Eventually, Payyade SC won the match by 1wkt and that quick fifty did played a big role in the win.

Another semi-final took place at the central maidan and this time it was between Thane Gramin Police and Ordinance Factory where in Thane Gramin Police won the toss and elected to bat first on the back of their good batting line up.
However, the pitch showed that it was more favorable for the bowlers and a big total on this ground is difficult with Thane Gramin Police all out for 149runs in 18.1 overs. Opener Hitesh Mhatre looked really confident taking on the bowlers with his 30ball 40. Apart from him, players failed to convert their 10’s and 20’s which resulted in a low total. From the bowlers, Nishant Mane (2/7) and Yash Singh (2/16) were the pick of the bowlers.
Thane Gramin Police however defended a moderately low total successfully as Ordnance Factory only managed to score 125/8 in 20overs despite opener Parag Patil’s hard fought 51 off 39balls (4fours). The bowlers did a collectively good job with Anil Shirsat being the pick of the bowlers taking 3/28 in 4overs. Sandesh Dharne with 2/23 and Ankit Vishwakarma with 2/19 also bowled really well as Thane Gramin Police won the semi-finals by 24runs.
It will be a interesting encounter tomorrow as Thane Gramin Police and Thane City Police take on each other for the title match.
