There was something which we witnessed today was a start of a movement for the local cricket. Yes it was a small beginning, it was a humble start but yes whatever it was, they were good signs for local cricket. If day 1 of the match can bring this much attention from the crowd as well as the media, the tournament will certainly have a huge traction by the end of the season 2!
When our CG team attended the media box end at the Wankhede Stadium, on their way, they found ticket vendors selling tickets outside station, they came across young boys asking for the route to Gate no.7, there was a proper entourage of security for the crowd to handle and to everyone’s delight, on a hot sunny summer day which also happens to be a working day, there was full media attendance from various media houses, there were spectators coming out in support of T20 Mumbai, the attendance in the crowd was surely not in three digits, there were special team buses with their team logos, there was band and cheerleaders! For a moment, it never looked like it was T20 Mumbai, it looked like any other International quality match happening at the Wankhede and these are nothing but wonderful signs for Mumbai Cricket where the club and first class cricketers are finally getting recognized.
Triumph Knights Mumbai North East batting first were found to be struggling with wickets falling at regular intervals. In an innings where the 2nd highest score was just 14, it was again Surya fresh from an IPL Trophy win a day ago shining truly like a sun. Coming at no.4, Suryakumar batted till the very end showing he belongs to a different league altogether. A well crafted 90* off just 56 balls witnessed 4 fours and 7 sixes and the best part of his innings was how he changed gears during the death overs. In the 1st half of his innings, Surya was playing at a strike rate of lower 100’s but he ended his innings with a strike rate of almost 180 with 28 runs in the last over thrashing youngster Minad Manjrekar for big sixes. Surya eventually took Mumbai North East to a total of 147/6 in 20 overs. Anjdeep Lad with 2/12 and Dhawal Kulkarni with 1/23 in 4 overs were the pick of the bowlers from Aakash Tigers.
Chasing 148, Aakash Tigers were off to a solid start with openers A Gomel (34) and Kaustub Pawar (41) putting up 67 runs for the 1st wicket. The rest of the batsman chipped in with starts as Aakash Tigers crossed the victory line in 19.3 overs winning the match by 5 wkts.
It was a good win for Aakash Tigers but it was certainly Surya stealing the show bringing in his T20 experience and form into T20 Mumbai!
Kurla SC after opting to bat first at the Bengal Club ground posted a decent total of 234/ in 45 overs. Opening the innings, Jayraj Popat scored a solid 50 off 61 balls which had 5 fours while it was all-rounder Jitesh Purabia at n0.5 again coming good for his team. Jitesh top score for his team hitting an impressive 73 off 80 balls which had 8 fours and a six ensuring the team crossed the 200 run mark.
Union Cricket Academy who were 57/5 at one stage got back into the game for a small session where in Mahendra Kadam at no.7 reigniting hopes for some time with his valiant 56 off 66 balls (7 fours). However, Union CA were all out for 153 runs with Pritam Shinde (3/19) and Bhavik Patel (2/19) being the pick of the bowlers.
Kurla Sport Club win the pre-quarterfinals and are at the top of the table on the back of some impressive team performance.
Ghatkoper Jolly Gymkhana after being put to bat first at the KSA Cross Maidan suffered a batting collapse getting all out for 54 runs. The team was struggling at one stage with 5/4. 11/6 and 7/19 before they luckily crossed the 50 run mark with the help of their lower order batsman. Left-arm fast bowler Shadab Usmani wrecked havoc over the opposition as he came up with an excellent spell of 5/13 in 8 overs with 4 maidens.
DY Patil Center in reply dominated with the bat too, Shaun Rodrigues opening the innings smashed an impressive 89 off 101 balls and also stitched a 135 run stand with Aadithyan Dev who came at no.4. Dev went on to score a classy knock of 175 runs in 196 balls (20 fours, 4 sixes) as he anchored the innings pushing DY Patil to a total of 327/5 dec in 70.1 overs.
Ghatkoper Jolly Gymhana trailing 273 runs in their 2nd innings were all out for 170 runs and this time it was left arm spinner Atharva Dakway impressing one and all with a spell of 5/32 in 19.1 overs with 8 maidens. Atharva got crucial wickets at regular intervals as DY Patil Center went on to win the match outright by an innings and 103 runs.
Kalina Center after opting to bat first at Matunga Gymkhana, Dadkar Maidan were off to a decent start with Jash Ganiga (73) and Angkrish (27) putting 98 runs for the 1st wicket. Coming at no.3, Ayush Jethwa carried the positive momentum ahead as he went on to score an impressive hundred. After remaining unbeaten on 99* in Kanga Knockout, Ayush this time reached the three digit figures as he scored 101 off 126 balls laced with 13 boundaries taking team total to 316/10 in 65 overs. Left-arm spinner Aditya Jadhav was the pick of the bowlers with 5/71 while off-spinner Manthan also bagged wkts.
Shivaji Park Center were bundled out for 158 runs thanks to a magical spell of spin bowling by Zenith Sachdev. Conceeding mere 9 runs in a spell of 16 overs, Zenith bagged 6 wkts alongwith 10 maidens which are just stunning numbers to dwell upon! Receiving a follow on, Shivaji Park were again all out for 101 runs with Zenith taking 2 wkts for 0 runs! Umar Khan was also impressive with his spell of 3/9 in 7 overs as Kalina Center won the match outright by an innings and 57 runs.
After an 11 wkt haul in the previous match, there is no stopping this left arm spinner as he continues to stamp his presence as one of the most promising spinners in his age category.
Abbott team after opting to bat first at the Cross Maidan Ground posted a very healthy total of 189/4 in 20 overs. Despite some early dents at the start of their innings, Sandesh Bhoir and Sunil Lakka at the middle order resurrected the game back into their team’s favor. Sandesh scored a quickfire 47 * off 28 balls (3 fours , 2 sixes) while Sunil Lakka gave the finishing touch with a brilliant 25 ball 51 which had 4 fours and 4 sixes as both the batters pushed the team towards a match winning total.
Defending a total of 190, MET Sports Club did manage to give a tough fight thanks to a hard fought 60 by Prathamesh at no.3. However, they managed to reach a total of 174/8 thanks to a brilliant spell by Sandesh Bhoir who came up with envious bowling figures of 4/23 in 4 overs. Bhoir was the pick of the bowlers while Sandesh Agare also chipped in with 2 wkts as Abbott won the match by 16 runs.
Sandesh Bhoir was declared ‘man of the match’ for his all-round performance.
Mohan CC after opting to bat first at the Shivaji Park Ground posted a competitive total of 257/9 in 45 overs. Prashant Yadav opening the innings set the tone giving a good start with his solid 69 off 67 balls while it was Amey Dighe at no.4 top scoring for Mohan CC with a gritty knock of 83 in 104 balls. A hard working knock which consisted just 6 boundaries and lots of running between the wickets taking his team towards a respectable total. From the bowlers, Vinay Keni with 4/34 was the pick of the bowlers.
Royal CC in reply were all out for 147 runs as none of their batters could convert the 20’s and 30’s into something substantial. The bowlers did a good job with Atharva Jadhav being the pick of the bowlers with 4/33 in 9 overs.
Mohan CC won the semi-finals by 110 runs and now qualify for the finals of the Kanga Knockout Tournament’19
Virar Center after opting to bat first could have suffered a batting collapse had it not been a fighting knock by opener Ayush Vartak. Virar were all out for 174 runs thanks to a brilliant spell by Neel Sawant taking 5/42 with the ball. Ayush fought it out alone waging a lone battle as he went on to score a classy knock of 93 runs off 97 ball (13 fours) scoring more than half of the team’s runs single handedly.
PDTSA Center in reply were all out for 68 runs thanks to 3 wkt hauls by Akshad Pathak and Ayush Vartak. Receiving a follow on, PDTSA were again wrapped up for 109 runs and this time it was Aditya Chaurasia coming up with a match winning bowling spell of 5/20 in 12 overs with 3 maidens. With a lead target of just 4 runs, Virar Center finished it off in 1.2 overs winning the match by 10 wkts.
Borivali CC after opting to bat first at MB Union, Cross Maidan posted a record total of 441/7 in 45 overs. That’s the highest ever total registered by any team in the semi-finals of the Kanga Knockout Tournament till date. Sushant Kadam coming at no.3 scored a solid 74 off just 50 balls (5 fours, 4 sixes) and also stitched a 150 run stand with no.4 batsman Abhinav Jagtap who went on to score this season’s highest individual score of 133 runs in mere 85 balls. Abhinav smashed 12 fours and 7 sixes en-route his blazing hundred and if that was not enough, more damage was inflicted by skipper Rakesh Naik who scored the fastest Kanga knockout hundred in the match at no.6. Rakesh reached his 101* in mere 42 balls which had as many as 8 sixes and 9 boundaries to his name. Rakesh who also scored one of the fastest Kanga hundred last year continues to impress one and all. Prathamesh Golatkar at no.5 also played a handy role with his 49 ball 52.
Deccan CC in reply were bundled out for 87 runs thanks to their reliable and in form spinner Himanshu Sonthalia who has been a revelation in this tournament with his wicket taking abilities. Himanshu returned with stunning bowling figures of 5/18 in 7 overs while Vishal Kavaiya with 3/8 was equally impressive as Borivali CC won the semi-finals by a record margin of 354 runs.
Mumbai 11 May, 2019 : – Mumbai Police Gymkhana ‘B’ emerged champions defeating their senior team Mumbai Police Gymkhana ‘A’ side by an overwhelming 92 runs in the final of the Inter-Corporation Cricket Tournament, organsied by Sahara Foundation and played at the Police Gymkhana ground, Marine Drive.
After being put in to bat first, Mumbai Police ‘B’ outfit managed to amass a score of 171 runs for the loss of seven wickets from their 20 overs. In reply, Mumbai Police ‘A’ batsmen struggled against the bowling of Kailas Kolekar who picked up five wickets for 26 runs, and were dismissed for a paltry 79 runs in 15.2 overs to hand their junior team a comfortable victory.
Rohan Bhosale 30 runs and Yogesh Patil 27 runs were mainly responsible in lifting the Mumbai Police ‘B’ innings and providing them a fighting total to defend. Mumbai Police all-rounder Mayur Sanap took 2 wickets for 31 runs.
Besides Kolekar fine efforts he was ably supported by Siddharth Ghule who grabbed two wickets for 18 runs.
Brief scores: Mumbai Police Gymkhana ‘B’ 171 for 7 wickets in 20 overs (Rohan Bhosale 30, Yogesh Patil 27; Mayur Sanap 2/31) beat Mumbai Police Gymkhana ‘A’ 79 all out in 15.2 overs (Swapnil Kulaye 18; Kailas Kolekar 5/26, Sidharth Ghule 2/18). Result: Mumbai Police Gymkhana ‘B’ won by 92 runs.

Fast Bowling requires immense level of fitness, practice and dedication, it’s not easy to bowl fast as you have to maintain line and length, you have to control your body & most importantly you have to develop strength and fitness. It is said by many relevant cricket personalities that even if you manage to touch 130+ with the ball, you can keep playing here and there at the club level because even reaching a speed of 130.00 on a consistent basis is not an easy task. So when a bowler hits 140, it is something very rare and especially in India where very few bowlers have so far achieved to cross the 140 kmph mark.

Hailed to be one of the fastest bowlers at present from the Mumbai stable and known to be a impressive outswinger of the ball, Tushar has troubled many with his swing and pace in the last few years. What’s more, Tushar has as economy of 3.07 (Tests), 5.45 (ODI’s) and 8.26 (T20) and a bowling average in the lower 20’s making him a suitable prospect for a opening pace bowler in the T20 format.
Hailing from Mumbai, Tushar Deshpande is one of the express bowlers with excellent line and length. Tushar has bowled some amazing spells in the past few seasons and he even recently played for Board President’s XI vs England A.
He made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy on 6 October 2016 while he made his List A debut for Mumbai in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 19th September 2018. Tushar took 17 wkts in 3 matches with 2 five wkt hauls in Ranji this season and 16 wkts in 8 matches in Vijay Hazare. Well, the 26yr old now needs no introduction- Shardul has already represented India in T20’s, ODI’s and Tests while he has touched 148 kmph with the ball playing for India. In first class career, he has 200 scalps in just 59 matches and in IPL too, he has had a sparkling career where he has bowled some excellent spells. Known to have mastered the knuckle ball which is a variation of a slow ball which is used by many Indian Pacers like Bhuveneshwar and Bumrah, its one of the stock weapons of Shardul to trouble the batsman. His knuckle balls had played a huge role in the Nidahas Trophy where his 4 wkts had helped India defeat Sri Lanka.
Shardul who once shared with the media”I have been practicing it for a long time (delivering Knuckle ball). It didn’t come easily. Whenever I found time to play with the white ball while playing domestic cricket, I used to try knuckle balls. Probably for two years, I have been practising it now.”
