From showing his might in the T20 Mumbai to being in the Ranji Probables, Sujit is making all the right noises this year and adding icing on the cake is now his brilliant hundred in probably the most difficult tournaments for batsman in Mumbai Cricket.

CCI after being put to bat first on their homeground were least affected to bat first as CCI skipper Paul opening the innings gave a solid start scoring 67 off 88 balls (10 fours). Coming in at no.4, Sujit Nayak played his natural game with some freeflowing strokes taking on the bowlers with confidence. At the end of the CCI Innings, Sujit remained unbeaten scoring 103* off 135 balls which had 10 fours and 2 sixes at a healthy strike rate of 76.30. CCI eventually declared their innings at 215/5d in 66 overs.
PJ Hindu Gymkhana in return got 19 overs to bat where in they scored 72/1 at the end of the game’s play. The match ended in a draw but it was certainly Sujit once again stamping his presence with an impressive knock just showing in how nick he is in.
Not many know that Indian Oil which is the largest commercial oil companies in the country also have their separate sports culture running across the country. The Indian Oil’s Sports Department employs players from different fields of sports with an aim to groom, nurture and support the sportsmen of our country. Indian Oil has been promoting sports since 3 decades recognizing sports as a holistic tool for development. Over the years, the company has employed over 100 sportspersons from ten different sports providing them with employment and sports scholarships where athletes are supported from its grassroots.

On 26th of September at BKC, Indian Oil conducted an interactive sports conference for the Indian Oil Players to interact with the media. The event was attended by the senior most officials of Indian Oil while Ajinkya Rahane (Indian Vice Captain in Tests), Dronavali Harika (India Chess) and Dhvaj Haria (India Snooker) who all are employed by Indian Oil were there to have conversation with the sports media.

The Senior Officials of Indian Oil were happy to witness the warm response given by the media fraternity as they said that they will be increasing the number of media interactions with their sports stars in the coming time.

Our CG team was also fortunate to ask Ajinkya Rahane on one change he would suggest in Mumbai Cricket and Ajinkya answered “If you talk about one change, I would definitely suggest that there should be more Times Shield Matches, because back then for us, Times Shield had all big players participating in the game and this format teaches you a lot of things whether it’s patience or technique and tournaments like these are indeed important for young Cricketers”

We also asked him whether there should be a separate Players Representative Committee in MCA and Ajinkya gracefully dodged the question stating it’s completely an MCA’s call and they would be the best to answer! Apart from that we also interacted with Indian Oil’s Chief Manager Amit Dani (Former Ranji Trophy Player) who also agreed that a Player’s Representative Committee would help a lot of players as there are so many player greviances which can be addressed.

One of the promising as well as unlucky batsman of his generation, Madhavrao Apte passed away on Monday Morning at Breach Candy hospital at the age of 86. Madhavrao was hailed to be one of the perfect opening batsmen by Mumbai who later went on to represent India with an average of close to 50.00 in 7 Tests. Madhavrao averaged 51.11 with a best score of 163* in the West Indies Tour representing India while he was one of the rare cricketers at that time who scored a Century on Ranji Debut.

He is believed to be one of the most unfortunate cricketers to have not got more opportunities to play for the country despite scoring runs heavily vs the best bowling attack of that time. In an interview to ESPN a few years bacl, Madhavrao Apte stated “he still doesn’t know the mystery behind his sudden dropping from the Indian Team despite starting the career in such a promising way”

Madhavrao Apte was also a crucial top order bulwark of Mumbai too averaging close to 40.00 with 2070 Ranji Trophy runs & 3336 runs overall. Such was his passion for the game he kept on playing with the same enthusiaism till the late sixties.

Madhavrao Apte also served as the president of the iconic Cricket Club of India (CCI) in Mumbai. During his tenure with CCI, he is said to have played a pivotal role in a decision taken at the club in the 1987-88 – tweaking the strict age-limit rules at the club to include a 15-year-old Sachin Tendulkar to represent the club as a player. He officially started serving the CCI club since 1989 making some major changes for the development of Mumbai Cricket. There are also number of tournaments in Mumbai which are conducted in the honor of his name.
Madhavrao Apte is also the only player to have played alongside D.B Deodhar – the “Grand Old Man of Indian Cricket” and Sachin Tendulkar. In the domestic season of 1987-88, 55-year old Apte was playing for the CCI at Shivaji Park Gymkhana vs a 14-year old Tendulkar!. The next year which followed, as the president of CCI, he changed the rules of the dressing room to permit Tendulkar to be a playing member of the club.

In 2000, the former Test opener enjoyed a fresh stint when he was appointed as the “Sheriff of the Mumbai City”. He also made his debut as an author in 2015 when he released a book called “As Luck Would Have it” which received a warm response from the cricket community.
One man many roles, a test cricketer, a domestic stalwart, a sheriff, CCI President, an author and last but not the least a thorough gentleman who leaves behind wonderful memories.
Madhavrao Apte is survived by his wife Sheela son Vaman & Mithila, and daughter Radhika, Janhavi and Rajiv and grandson Vikram & sister Kuma
The body will be brought to his residence at Woodland Apts, Pedder Road
around 12.15 noon today, after which it will be taken to Shivaji Park crematorium.
