Mumbai: A splendid all-round display by Atharva Dakwe, who claimed two wickets for 24 runs and scored 36 runs was instrumental in John Bright Cricket Club registering a comfortable 6-wicket victory against Gaud Saraswat Cricket Club in the concluding Group-B league match of Lord Northbrook CC orgainsed 1st LNCC Omni Global Trophy Invitation Under-19 (45 overs) Cricket Tournament 2021, conducted under the auspices of the Mumbai Cricket Association and played at the Mumbai Police Gymkhana ground, Marine Drive on Wednesday.

Atharva and teammate Anurag Singh (2 for 24 runs) combined effectively to restrict Gaud Saraswat CC to a modest total of 166 for 9 wickets in their innings of 45 overs. Gaud Saraswat who decided to bat first struggled and Awais Khan was the only batsman who managed to stay long in the middle scoring 31 runs.

In reply, John Bright faced little difficulty as they easily chased the winning target with plenty to spare. The John Bright batsmen dominated the rival bowling as they reached 168 for the loss of just 4 wickets in 36.5 overs. Staedy batting from Saahil Shetty 35 runs and Atharva 36 runs carried the team to victory. This was the second win for John Bright who with four points finished in first position in the group and have now progressed to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile in an inconsequential Group-A match, Payyade Sports Club defeated Shantibhai Sheth Memorial CC by an emphatic 8 wickets at the Karnatak SA ground, Cross Maidan. Deciding to bat first, Shantibhai Sheth were bowled out for a paltry 114 runs in 44 overs. Saqib Mulani top-scored with 36 runs. Payyade bowler Rajesh Sardar was very effective and economical as he claimed 5 wickets for only 4 runs.

Payade easily surpassed the Shantibhain Sheth losing just two wickets as they reached 115 runs in 16.5 overs. Opening batsman Musheer Khan who has been in great form scored 68 runs to steer Payyade to victory.

New Hind Cricket Club the third team in the group topped the group with four points and were already assured a place in the semi-finals.

Brief scores – Group-A: Shantibhai Sheth Memorial CC 114 all out, 44 overs (Saqib Mulani 36, Rajesh Sardar 5 for 4) lost to Payade SC 115 for 2 wickets, in 16.5 overs (Musheer Khan 68). Result: Payade SC won by 8 wickets.

Every now and then, the sport of cricket blesses us with new emerging faces who go on to play at higher levels. You talk about Sachin Tendulkar, Wasim Jaffer, Vinod Kambli and so many other names, these players stamped a mark for themselves from a very young age itself coming up with brilliant performances every now and then in the most challenging tournaments.

One such small example was witnessed a few days back in Chanawala Tournament at the New Era Cricket Club wicket in Mumbai. Cricket Explained team batting first almost suffered a batting collapse had it not been their opener Harsh Shrawage scoring a gritty 89 runs off 103 balls (13 fours ,1 six). Apart from him, the team registered as many as 4 ducks with not a single batsman managing to score in double digits. Swapnil Bare with 4/5 in 6 overs alongwith 2 maidens was simply unplayable while Akshay Bhatia with 3/10 was equally impressive.

Defending a total of 136, the pressure was certainly on Cricket Explained bowlers. XFF Cricket Academy were bundled out for 97 runs in 23.2 overs courtesy Cricket Explained Team’s little master Arya Sagare. To expect an 11 year old to win a game is a little too much but Arya showed everyone yesterday that size, age and height doesn’t matter as long as the hunger to win and perform well exists. Arya returned with impressive bowling figures of 4/26 in 7 overs decieving batsman almost twice and thrice his age with his impressive leg-spinners. Apart from him, Shakti Kumar and Akshay Thakur bagged 2 wickets each.

Cricket Explained Academy won by 36 runs while little Aarya won the “Man of the Match” award for his heroics. With this win, Arya earned respect for himself and his team from the opposition as well as from the organizers.

Union Cricket Academy opting to bat first in pre-quarter finals of SRCA Trophy at JSP Cricket Ground, Ambernath entered the field with intensity amassing 246/4 in 20 overs. Opening the innings, Rohit Khot entertained one and all with his swashbuckling innings of 100* in mere 55 balls. Rohit smashed 8 fours and 6 sixes batting till the very end to push his team towards a big total. Apart from him, Shashwat Jagtap (50 off 30 balls) and Parag Jadhav (43 off 20 balls) were the top scorers for the team.

Dnyanraj Sports in reply were all out for 84 runs thanks to a disciplined bowling performance by the bowlers. Sahil Shetty with 2/5 in 2.1 overs was the pick of the lot while Bhavin Darji, Saroj Chaubey and Prasad Shingote also bagged 2 wkts a piece.

Played at JSP Cricket Ground, Ambernath, Maharashtra Cricket Academy opting to bat first were struggling at one stage with their top 3 back in the hut and scoreboard reading 4/3 in 3.1 overs. However, the middle order batters consisting of Siddhesh Gawande (15 runs), Shekhar (27 runs off 15 balls) brought back some momentum.  Coming at no.6, Rohit Khot provided a crucial contribution smashing an unbeaten 34* off 17 balls with 3 sixes to push his team towards a defendable total of 123/10 in 18.3 overs.

SRCA Team in reply could only muster 109/7 in 20 overs with skipper Swapnil Rawool (27* off 29 balls) fighting it out top scoring for his team. The bowlers did a really good job with Kazim coming up with a brilliant spell of 2/13 in 4 overs alongwith a maiden. Apart from him, Gafoor Shaikh, Arib Dolare and Rohit Singh chipped in with a wicket each.

Maharashtra Cricket Academy with some brilliant team performances throughout the tournament proved worthy of the title “Hell of a Cricket Team” while Rohit with his all-round performances certainly made an impact winning the Hell of a Cricketer Award.

It was a difficult day at the office for Islam Gymkhana as they struggled to pile on runs on their home ground getting all out for 69 runs in 16.2 overs. With most of the batters struggling, Neelkant Parab’s 26 off 17 was the highest score from Islam Gymkhana team. Parsee Gymkhana bowlers performed really well striking at regular intervals and maintaining discipline with the ball. Medium pacer Shivam Malhotra with 2/8 in 3 overs and one maiden proved to be quite impressive. Apart from Shivam, Aditya Dhumal with 3/17 in 2.2 overs and Manish Rao with 2/11 were the pick of the lot.

Chasing 70 looked like a mere formality for Parsee Gymkhana as opener Aakarshit Gomel went all guns blazing smashing an unbeaten 44* off mere 12 balls smashing 5 fours and 4 sixes. Gomel has continued to prove his skills in the shorter formats and he was even selected in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Squad this season for Mumbai. Gomel was well supported by Swapnil Pradhan who played the second fiddle with 24* off 15 balls.

Young Comrade CC after opting to bat first at Goregaon Sports Club were reeling at one stage with 3 wickets down & not a single run on board! The trouble did not end there with scoreboard reading 0/3, 4/7 and 5/19 until Swapnil Bivalkar chipped in with 22 runs at the middle order alongwith some contributions by the lower order taking their total to 69/10 in 19.5 overs.

The bowler who provided maximum impact was left arm pacer Jai Kothari who came up with a disciplined bowling spell of 4/8 in 3.5 overs alongwith one maiden. Jai was bang on and took some crucial top order wickets while Yashraj Malap with 3/16 in 4 overs (1 maiden) was equally impressive.

Dadar Union Sporting Club chased down the score in mere 5.4 overs winning the match by 10 wickets. Openers Sagar Chabbaria (34* off 15 balls) and left hander Divyaansh Saxena (37* off 15 balls) wasted no time in finishing the game as both the openers thrashed the bowlers with disdain to push their team to a commanding win.
