When we talk about Vasu Paranjape, he is a personality which has multiple dimensions. Only limiting him to a cricketer or a coach would’nt do justice to the enormous legacy he has built in all these decades. You ask about Vasu Paranjape sir to different types of people in Mumbai cricket right from the coaches to cricketers to selectors, everyone will have a different story to tell about him and each story would be outright inspiring or motivating or something to learn about.

Born on November 21, 1938, Vasu Paranjape passed away at the age of 82 in his matunga residence leaving behind a rich legacy for generations to cherish. Vasu sir made his first class debut in 1956 and played his last first class match in 1970 representing teams like Mumbai and Baroda. A utility all-rounder who can bat while also prove to be a handy bowler with his left arm orthodox spin. Vasu Paranjape was amongst the most prominent club cricketers in Mumbai during his time representing a star studded Dadar Union team which was known to be one of the most powerful teams in Mumbai cricket at that time. In a coaching career spanning more than 50 years, Vasu sir has coached multiple teams, multiple states at multiple age groups.

More than his coaching profile, the way he coached the players and how players evolved under him is the stuff of the legends. Vasu sir was also amongst the first coaches to be appointed at National Cricket Academy in 2000 alongwith the likes of Nari Contractor and Hanumant Singh. Vasu Paranjape has also been a mentor to many international & domestic cricketers right from the likes of Dilip Vengsarkar, Sanjay Manjrekar, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Jatin Paranjape, Amol Muzumdar, Sulakshan Kulkarni to name a few. Vasu Paranjape’s son Jatin Paranjape also played for India in ODI’s in 1998. Jatin also played for Mumbai in 62 FC matches between 1991 to 2001.

Vasu Paranjape was a one man show of coaching, scouting and captaincy. His intellect, game sense, humor, approach towards the game, his ability to strike conversations with the players, know their loopholes, his ability to shield and protect the players from criticism was unmatched for any cricket coach in generations to come and this is a statement made by many International cricketers including the likes of Rohit Sharma.

Quote from Umesh Patwal – International Coach (Coached Teams like Nepal, Afghanistan, Mumbai to name a few)

Umesh Patwal with Vasu Paranjape sir

Vasu sir was an absolute legend. His journey with Mumbai Cricket Association has been in multiple facets and you can’t just describe it in one line or one designation. His contribution to the game and especially to Mumbai Cricket has been extensive. I have learned a lot from Vasu sir who is my mentor. I know Vasu sir since Mumbai U17 Camp days. I remember, Vasu sir had spotted Rohit Sharma batting in New Hind nets during his U17 days and sir had told me “One day this boy will play for India” Vasu sir has trained numerous International cricketers and he was also amongst the first coaches to be appointed by NCA during its formation in the year 2000. That batch of 2000 at National Cricket Academy had so many Indian Cricketers including the likes of Rahul Dravid and many more. Rest in peace and heartfelt condolences to the family. We have lost one crucial part of Mumbai Cricket.

Quote from Sulakshan Kulkarni: Former Mumbai Ranji Player & Coach

Sulakshan Kulkarni cricket coach

Indian Cricket has lost a very big man, you don’t need to be Don Bradman or Sachin Tendulkar to be famous, sometimes having your own uniqueness also makes you special and Vasu sir was one of those characters, a once in a generation personality. I have so many stories on him that I can write a book on him. I just don’t know which story to tell. His mere presence in the dressing room or on the ground would bring positivity amongst the players. Also Vasu sir was one coach full of positivity, wisdom and sense of humor.

I remember once Jatin (his son) came back from an U19 Tour from Pakistan which had bowlers like Aaqib javed, Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram to name a few. Jatin at that time made a name for himself and we were once playing together for Dadar Union in a Purshottam shield match. Vasu sir was leading the team and when Jatin came to bowl, Vasu sir set an attacking field since the ball was turning. Jatin bowled a full toss and batsman smashed a powerfull pull shot hitting the short leg fielder. It hit the fielder so hard that the ball rebounded and resulted in a catch which I took. Coming in a huddle to celebrate the wicket, Vasu sir told Jatin, “bhai ek ball mai ek hie wicket leni hai” referring to the short fielder who was almost flat on the ground after that ball hit him! One more incident I remember was, I had given my bat to Jatin, Vasu sir told Jatin, let me do some lapping so that bat would be great for use, Jatin however played with the bat without getting it lapped and while playing, the bat broke into multiple pieces. Coming back to pavilion, Vasu sir called him and said, “Ab is bat ko toothpick ke liye istemaal karna” “use the pieces of bat as a toothpick” chuckled vasu sir as entire dressing room had a good laugh over it. Sulakshan Kulkarni further shared, Vasu sir was a real friend, philoshopher and guide. He had the speciality of talking with everyone in same style. He was a person full of positivity, you even take your personal problems to him and you won’t feel the age difference. Sunil Gavaskar even wrote in his book, I got inspired by Vasu Paranjape’s captaincy. My heartfelt condolence to the legend, the paranjape family and it’s certainly the end of an era.

Wasim Jaffer

“It’s a huge loss. He has helped so many cricketers in so many different ways and helped them become better players. His sense of humor is known to everyone and he had a knack of making everyone laugh with his one liners. We have lost a giant Mumbai personality”

Yet another century for the Indian born Kenyan cricketer, Pushkar Sharma. The century came in a tough time when Ruaraka Sports club was two down for 34 after 7.4 overs. Pushkar made an impact to lead the team from the front with his impeccable innings.

Winning the toss, Ngara cricket club elected to field first. Ruaraka Sports club incurred two blow when one of their openers and middle order batsman was sent back to the hut by Akash Shah. Pushkar Sharma who had opened the innings didn’t hesitate to capitalise on the scoring opportunities. Nitish Hirani and skipper, Pushkar glued a vital 67 runs partnership and later Pushkar was well supported by Sachin Gill. Both the batters oozed off the pressure and grasp the opportunity to showcase their skills. They jolted a 135 runs stand before Gill was cleaned up by Dhyey Patel. Pushkar continued to smack sixes and fours to take the total to 354. Pushkar amassed an unbeaten 167* from just 140 balls with 17 boundaries and 4 sixes. With this century, Pushkar is now at the top of the league with 369 runs from 5 innings. He averages 92.3 in the tournament so far.

The opposition kept on loosing wickets at regular intervals and succumbed to the hefty total. Their innings was closed down to 152. Sachin Gill had his say with the ball in hand after he scalped two big wickets of the openers. Vishil Patel went on to bag four wickets and resisted the opposition batters to get runs under their belt.  Pushkar Sharma was adjudged “man of the match” for his unbeaten 167 from just 140 deliveries.

At the end of the match Pushkar shared with Cricketgraph, ”  Despite losing the toss, we got to do what we wanted (bat first). So my target was to stay on the wickets and play till the end.  I tried to find the scoring opportunities and successfully i could implement everything well. I would like to thank god and my family to keep the faith in me. Pushkar Sharma also thanked Indiafirst Life Insurance Company with whom he has sponsorship.

Here’s wishing Pushkar all the luck & we wish he continues with the same momentum and gets going forward with similar results.

Najafgarh even though a small district is always hustling and bustling with sporting activities with cricket taken very seriously by the aspiring youngsters. One such young and emerging coach from Najafgarh is Subodh Yadav who is providing cricket coaching to aspiring cricketers from his district.

Subodh is all but 23 years old but staying connected to the game brought him into coaching. A professional cricketer himself, Subodh even played for Jharkhand U16 State team but had to quit playing professional cricket due to an ankle injury which forced him out of the game & that is how S.Y Warriors Cricket Academy in Najafgarh came into place.

Speaking with Cricketgraph, Subodh shared “I played state level cricket myself but one injury which I am facing till now means I can’t play professional cricket anymore. However, whatever knowledge I have gained in all these years, I want to pass it on to the young cricketers of Najafgarh and hopfully they will go on to play higher levels and make our Najafgarh proud again like Sehwag sir.

Picket CC opting to bat first on Greenview Cricket Ground, Telangana were all out for a modest total of 125/10 in 44 overs. Opener Aryan Reddy was the only batsman who looked confident for his 49 while rest of the players failed to come up with any substantial scores. Adnan CC bowlers came up bowled really well with most of their bowlers chipping in with a wicket or two.

Defending a low total of 125 runs, the pressure was certainly on the Picket CC players. However, it was a stunning bowling performance from all-rounder Aryan Reddy who returned with match winning bowling figures of 6/40 in 10 overs. Aryan kept on providing crucial breakthroughs restricting Adnan CC to 115 all out in 33.5 overs. Apart from Aryan, Skipper G. Prem also took one important wicket and he bowled well overall providing the support role to Aryan.

Aryan has been performing well in the HCA matches both with the bat as well as with the ball this season. With a century in his previous outing followed by 49 runs & 6 wickets in this game, Aryan continues to make a strong case for himself to represent Hyderabad’s state team at U14 Level.

“I did my first assignment for DDCA in 2019 working with the Senior Women’s team. Due to covid 19 restrictions and lack of opportunity in home state i wasn’t able to participate in any teams for the domestic season 2020 – 2021. For the last one &a half year, I changed my focus from working to teaching. I got to be a part of teaching faculty at DY Patil University, Sports Authority of India (for Kayaking). I also had a pleasure to help aspiring strength and conditioning coaches achieve prestigious certifications like CSCS, ASCA Level 1 & 2 etc.

Currently I am doing my MSc in Performance Coaching from Setanta College, Ireland. Glad that I’m the youngest participant in the program with all the elite S&C’s in India. This will be my 3rd domestic season assignment and I’m determined to deliver my work to the best of my knowledge. I am really looking forward to work with Delhi Senior Men’s team which boasts of some big names as well as young talents. It will be a great journey working with them as I will share my best in terms of S&C expertise with the players so they can perform at their optimum best at higher levels. I would also like to thank Cricketgraph team for being part of my journey throughout these times”

Test match is an ultimate platform for cricketer to exhibit their skills and the one who is able to perform in the longer format certainly indicates a solid character to be a successful cricketer. Played at NSC Cricket Ground, Venkateshwar Cricket Academy opting to bat first scored 199/10 in 40 overs with Chirag Rana (47) being the top scorer for the team. Jai Maa Ambhey CC in reply were bundled out for 160 runs courtesy a brilliant bowling spell by Ronak Waghela who returned with astonishing bowling figures of 7/32 in 12.3 overs.
